Mount Adams Summit Trail
The northeast ridge of Adams is an absolute delight. The scramble is roughly 0.25 mile on classic Crestone-style conglomerate and granite rock; that means lots of knobby holds! From the base of the ridge, finding the line looks like a thoroughly daunting prospect. Once on the ridge, however, the line becomes apparent, as the mountain reveals its best route. The exposure is diminished by switching from the south side of the ridge to the north and back; there is always a safe class 3 option to negotiate obstacles. The hike/backpack in is very scenic. Camping at Horn Lakes is awesome. The amphitheater of enormous peaks surrounds you to the southwest, while your view to the northeast shows the flat, peaceful farmland and city lights of Westcliffe. This is a perfect late-summer or early-autumn trip, best done as a two-day adventure. It is certainly possible as a hearty dayhike, but the area is so pristine and beautiful, I see no reason to rush the experience.
