Missouri Gulch - Elkhead Pass
A day hike to Elkhead Pass or backpack to Pine Creek. This challenging trail climbs along steep Missouri Gulch, then mounts a succession of rolling rises as it breaks out into the alpine tundra. At the top of the grade is Elkhead Pass with its stunning mountain views, and beyond the pass lies the Missouri Basin, an elevated shelf clad in tundra and surrounded by lofty crags. This trail offers access to the upper reaches of Pine Creek for backpackers, and peak baggers can attempt Missouri Peak (a scramble route) or Mounts Belford and Oxford along the way. Elkhead Pass makes a good destination for a challenging day hike.
