Mesa Trail: Northern Segment
Hiking nirvana in Boulder cannot be attained without a jaunt on the well-known and venerable Mesa Trail—one of the original foothills trails networks and open space parks that inspired the creation of so many other pieces of paradise in Boulder County. This rolling trail climbs high onto the side of Green Mountain and travels below the landmark Flatiron rock formations all the way south to Eldorado Springs Road. It features great vistas to the west and east as it roller coasters ever southward. You can also access the trail from several places along the way; consult a map. Aside from Chautauqua, one of my favorite starting points is at the south end off of the Eldorado Springs Rd. The trail climbs up to spectacular views of the Flatirons in about 1 mile. A variety of loop trail options make for delightful outings of varying difficulty.
