Meadowlark / Plymouth
Deer Creek Canyon Park is another of Jefferson County Open Space’s fine foothill parks. Conveniently close for Denver metro visitors, it offers nearly 10 miles of trail through diverse habitats. In June, more than 60 wildflower species compete for attention with views of the red sandstone Fountain Formation and the distant Denver cityscape. Unique to this hike is the prairie starflower. While this is a varied-use park, several of the trails are for hikers only, including much of this loop. In its 3.5 miles, Meadowlark/Plymouth trail travels through open grasslands, scrub oak, Douglas fir, and rocky riparian ecosystems. The Meadowlark Trail portion of the loop is for foot traffic only until it joins the Plymouth Trail at 2.2 miles. The last 1.3 mile leg, which drops fairly quickly, is used by mountain bikers as well as hikers. Wildflower alert: A chance to discover the locally uncommon, piquant prairie starflower.
