McCullough Gulch Trail
Breckenridge, CO

McCullough Gulch Trail
If you have ever climbed Quandary Peak (14,265 feet) to bag a Fourteener and have looked to the northeast and down, you probably saw Upper Blue Reservoir as one of the turquoise drops far below. Near the reservoir are picturesque falls that are a popular day excursion. Most hikers (and bikers) end their hike here. However, the trail continues upward for another 1.2 miles, climbing to a tarn at 12,955 feet. Attempt this second leg of the hike when the skies are cloudless, since you will be above timberline all the way up. If you do hike to the tarn, a topographic map is essential (Trails Illustrated recommended). Bring mosquito repellent if hiking in July and August.
