Lower Barr Trail
Pikes Peak is the ultimate mountain of the Colorado Springs region, and the Barr Trail offers the ultimate hike to the top of this massif. A study in switchbacks, this famous and historic trail climbs an arduous 13 miles and 7400 feet to the summit. Though worthwhile, a hike to the top far exceeds the parameters of this guide. Instead, this short hike on the lower reaches of the trail offers a sample of the terrain, steepness and legend that is Pikes Peak. This relatively short route features great views and strenuous walking. Wear good shoes, keep a reasonable pace, and if you’ve the inclination, head on up past the picnic grounds—you’ll be amply rewarded.
