Lodgepole and Sunny Aspen Trails
This loop wanders through the forests of a history-rich former ranch. The remnants of an old ski area, used in the 1940s, are hidden in the upper reaches of the park. And rumor has it P. T. Barnum (of Barnum & Bailey circus fame) housed his animals at the ranch during several winters in the late 1880s. Don’t expect to come across any unusual wildlife forms as you hike this route—instead of elephants and lions, the park is inhabited by the usual assortment of tassel-eared Abert’s squirrels, mule deer, and an occasional elk. You will gain a bit of altitude, and so earn views across the scenic Turkey Creek corridor. But it is the forests that give this hike its distinctive flavor, from the quiet envelope of the lodgepole pine woodland to the chattering openness of the old-growth aspen at the trail’s apex.
