Independence Townsite
The remnants of the mining town of Independence huddle high on the Roaring Fork River. At nearly 11,000 feet, the summer sun barely warms the stiff winds blowing down from the Continental Divide. These winds whip through the timbers of the buildings that remain standing and blast over the rotting foundations of those that have collapsed, stirring up images of how the harshness of the landscape must have been reflected in the lives of the men who worked here.
