Holy Cross City
Colorado’s fascinating gold rush days come to life on this outing to a genuine ghost town. Here is a fascinating hike up a rough, four-wheel drive road to a genuine Colorado ghost town. Holy Cross City flourished between 1880 and 1884, provided housing for miners and their families, and achieved a maximum population of about 300. Today, extensive cabin ruins remain, as well as rusty boilers and a shaker table, all testaments to what once was a bustling place. As it all drifts back to its natural state, there is a sense of peace in this grassy meadow with lovely vistas to the north and east. A signboard gives some background information about the site, but contrary to expectations, the famous Mount of the Holy Cross is not in view.
