Hewlett Gulch

The longest part of the popular Hewlett Gulch Trail is an easy hike, with about twenty shallow crossings through Gordon Creek. The trail follows the gulch for about 2 miles and then forms a 3.7-mile loop. In the first mile of trail, there are several stone foundations dating back to the early 1900s. Poppies and lilac bushes in this area are likely the remains of horticultural efforts by the early settlers. Hewlett Gulch Trail offers one of the most enjoyable hikes in the lower Poudre Canyon. The profusion of wildflowers and butterflies in the spring can put a hiker on visual overload. Although the usual cautions exist for mountain lions, snakes, and bears, hikers are more likely to see fox, deer, songbirds, and lots of squirrels. The first couple of miles are easy enough for families with youngsters to enjoy. Dogs under voice control are allowed.
