Hahns Peak Summit Trail
Hahns Peak is by far the easiest hike in this book. Taken just by the numbers, this mountain may seem too mellow to mention. So why put such a simple trek alongside such brawny adventures as Lead Mountain, Storm King Peak, and Mount Powell? My rationale for including Hahns is simple. First of all, it’s a fun hike that offers the best views I’ve seen of the beautiful Steamboat Springs and Steamboat Lake areas. The old mining ruins are intriguing, and the fire tower on the summit is a nice touch. But my main incentive to include Hahns is that it’s a great complementary adventure to any visit to Steamboat Springs. Chances are you would be coming to Steamboat Springs to mountain bike, ski, camp, or just be in the outdoors. Hahns takes only a half day to climb, meaning you can mix it in with other activities. In the winter, climbing Hahns from the paved road only adds another 3.0 miles, round trip, to the adventure. Its low angle makes it relatively safe to climb in snow. Hahns brings to focus the distinct beauty of the Steamboat area year-round.
