Gregory Canyon and Saddle Rock Trails
Climbing into Gregory Canyon, you will be hard-pressed to remember you are on the edge of a major metropolitan area. The trail is wild and rugged from its outset, ascending west along a sun-dappled south-facing slope to the forested apex of a steep ravine. It is not only the stunning scenery that will numb your mind to the civilization that lies to the east; sweat and lactic acid coursing through muscle adds to the enchantment. Lest I have just put you off, remember that any mountain trail is only as hard as you make it. If you keep a pace within your abilities, drink plenty of water, and snack if you need to, this trail is a piece of cake. And a very rewarding piece at that. As you descend along the Saddle Rock Trail, you will be treated to spectacular views down the canyon and onto the high plains, where the city of Boulder is spread before you like a quilt of silver and gray, stretching to the green and gold of the plains, and melting into the broad blue sky. This trail is also steep, so watch your footing, and take your time.
