Crystalline Gore Creek is full of whitewater until it reaches the Vail Valley, where it serpentines gracefully through the length of the renowned resort. The trail, which follows the river, offers visitors to the Vail area a chance to taste subalpine ambience while actually hiking at montane zone elevations. Popular Gore Creek Trail, traversing a variety of habitats, offers a “century” wildflower viewing experience in Eagles Nest Wilderness Area. At peak bloom—about mid-July—the hike not only offers many different flower species, but Gore Creek is in full spate, creating a pleasing combination. On the west side of the frontage road bridge, the trail starts climbing at a fairly even pace on its 1,200-foot vertical gain to a lush meadow. On its way to the meadowed slope around the three-mile turnaround point, the route encounters a variety of terrain, including some rather rocky stretches. Gore Lake can be reached in 6.4 miles with a 2,700-foot elevation gain from the trailhead for those with an early start and plenty of stamina.
