Golden Gate Canyon State Park got its name from Golden Gate City, which was located at the mouth of Tucker Gulch that led to the gold fields of Black Hawk and Central City. The two former mining towns, now popular as limited-stakes gambling destinations, are southwest of the park. Situated 30 miles from Denver, Golden Gate Canyon State Park offers 14,000 acres of conifer forest, rocky peaks, mountain splendor, and aspenfilled meadows. There are twelve trails in the park, each named after an animal and marked with the animal’s footprint. The background shape of the trail marker indicates the difficulty of the trail. Circles denote easy trails, squares are moderate, and diamonds mark the difficult trails. Trailheads with parking areas are easily accessible from the main roads in the park. The pleasant visitors center has water, restrooms, and exhibits of local fauna and flora, as well as detailed maps of the park and its environs.
