Foothills Trail: Reservoir Ridge Natural Area
The Foothills Trail travels through three city natural areas, as well as county recreation areas along Horsetooth Reservoir, and features a wide variety of foothills topography with ponds, hills, valleys, climbs, and descents and great reservoir, city, and mountain views. It is an intermediate mountain biking trail but is easy to negotiate on foot. Making the entire round-trip on foot would be challenging; enjoying pieces of the trail is more fun. This trail segment can be accessed from either the east or west, but the most popular access is east from Michaud Lane and features a gradual climb with water and plains views with a loop trail on top. It is a very visually rewarding and popular multiuse trail. The west side of the trail overlooks the north end of Horsetooth Reservoir while the east side features good foothills scenery and views. There is very little shade, so start early, or be prepared for summer heat. This trail is usable almost year-round.
