Fishhook Lake, Lost Lake, and Lake Elmo Trail

The trail also extends for 20 miles inside the Mount Zirkel Wilderness where leash laws prevail. This hike follows a little over 3 miles of this very old trail. This section of trail does not run on the ridge of the Continental Divide but rather is on its west side in the valley. It leads to three lakes, with Lake Elmo 3 miles from the trailhead. The historic antecedents of the Wyoming Trail date to circa 1910, when the trail was used by sheep ranchers in Rawlins, Wyoming, to drive sheep to sales in Steamboat Springs. Later, the trail was used to drive sheep to summer pasture in the Routt National Forest. The grazing allotments have since been cut back or discontinued. Today, the trail is mostly used for hiking.
