Devil’s Backbone, Blue Sky, & Coyote Ridge Trails
This very popular county trail west of the City of Loveland connects with the Coyote Ridge and Blue Sky trails. This trail weaves through the dramatic rock formations in the foothills known as the “hogback.” A beautiful swath of land, Devil’s Backbone Open Space was saved from development, and you can make your way north, all the way to Horsetooth Mountain Park west of Fort Collins in it. You can set up a one-way car shuttle with the Coyote Ridge access being the exit point short of South Inlet Bay and Horsetooth Mountain Park. That adventure is approximately 7 miles one-way and follows a pretty, moderate, roller-coaster trail. This trail can be used for nice out-and-back jaunts of any length; the eye candy makes it a treat regardless of your ambitions. Since there is virtually no shade on the trail, start early in the morning or early evening to avoid the blazing sun or use it in the spring, fall, or even winter when temperatures are cool.
