Crystal Creek Overlook
Gunnison, CO

Crystal Creek Overlook
The north rim of Black Canyon of the Gunnison is far less visited than the south rim. Both offer astounding views into the depths of the intriguing dark chasm. Abounding in wildflowers, the genial Crystal Creek Trail winds up at an overlook high above Crystal Lake, a slender body of green reservoir water. Despite its higher trailhead elevation, Crystal Creek Trail to the overlook begins its bloom season early in June. Actually located within the Curecanti National Recreation Area’s west end, the two-and-a-half-mile hike travels through diversity, both in scenery and plant communities. The route drifts down, then works back up before a final descent to the impressive overlook. Early morning or late afternoon is a good time to hike here. Wildflower Alert: Larkspur leads this early season, off-the-beaten-path hike to a great canyon overlook.
