Boreas Pass East
The ancient Greeks named the god of the north wind Boreas. Colorado’s Boreas Pass, crossing the Continental Divide between South Park and Breckenridge, withstands blizzards capable of piling up to 10 feet of snow. But in summer, Boreas Pass offers a fine hike up the east side of the divide where wildflowers line the trail and the view extends forever. Even late in the season, you can find as many as seven dozen different species. The route up from Como to the pass is scenic and gentle—and generous with wildflowers. In August, a plentiful lavender, yellow, and white floral procession colors the aspen-lined road. The pass is popular with visitors on weekends, many taking a look at the historic railroad house whose sturdy walls continue to stand. Wildflower alert: Rare and fragrant globe gilia is a “find” here.
