Blue Lake (Larimer County)
Fort Collins hikers know this special, out-of-the-way place for alpine lakes, uncrowded trails and 12,000-foot peaks. Many Coloradans never visit the Rawah Wilderness Area, although Fort Collins hikers know this wild, out-of-the-way area well; full of alpine lakes, uncrowded trails and 12,000-foot peaks. Here’s a hike to introduce you to this wonderful playground. This lake, one of several in Colorado called Blue Lake, sits like a sparkling gem in its cirque, typical of the east side of the Rawah Range, whose pink granites have been deeply cut in a textbook case of glacial erosion. Backpackers rave about the flowers, fishing and campsites around these lakes. The Rawahs (it fittingly means wilderness in Indian) is only about 15 miles long, but it is really a southern extension of Wyoming’s Medicine Bow Mountains.
