Black Forest Regional Park Loop
Envision an oasis of a different kind. In the midst of the sun-scorched prairie, within sight of a great mountain range but still quite distant, a shady forest grows. Ponderosa pine are spread on the land with a parklike neatness, allowing enough sun to reach the forest floor for kinnikinnick and purple penstemon to flourish. At high points, you can see the rolling green plains to the east, and the white-streaked massif of Pikes Peak to the west. This is the Black Forest, a wonderful splash of woodland amid the prairie grasses. Like the Fox Run park complex, Black Forest offers more than just hiking: you can mountain bike, picnic and set the kids free at the playground or on the large grassy playing field.
