Avalanche Gulch
This short but steep segment of the Colorado Trail makes a long and largely viewless climb to the divide above Silver Creek, just east of Mount Yale. Most of the climb is on hot southern exposures, making this a good trail to avoid during a heat wave. There is no surface water along the trail, so be sure to pack along an adequate supply. This hike can be linked up with the Silver Creek hike for a one-day hike across the North Cottonwood divide; set up a two-car shuttle and plan to approach this trek from the Silver Creek side to avoid the worst of the climbing.
