Alcove Nature, Canyon Rim, and Window Rock Loop Trails
This collection of rambles through Colorado’s high desert leads to overlook points that most kids say are “really cool.” Alcove Nature Trail, one of the few trails in Colorado National Monument far from a precipitous canyon rim, serves as a delightful introduction to desert wildlife and geology. Two brochures accompany this 31-site interpreted trail, the “Junior Ranger” version aimed at young hikers. Children will make their own discoveries along the trail, and the sagebrush lizard darting straight up a cliff is likely to delight them. Your companions can “feel” where the insect predator prefers to live by placing their hands on sand exposed to sun and in the shade. Encourage kids to imagine the sand remaining on their hands is composed of granules from the bottom of lakes that covered this dry landscape millions of years ago.
