Lake Agnes
Located within the 70,000 acres of the Colorado State Forest, the popular trail to Lake Agnes is short but is steep enough to rate as an intermediate trail. Not designed for the beginner, this trail represents a ready challenge to the experienced backcountry skier or snowshoer. Running through dense forests, the trail provides so many types of terrain that when you make it to the cabin, you will be ready for a well-deserved rest before exploring the surrounding slopes. The Nokhu Hut, named after the Nokhu Crags to the east of the hut, is operated by Never Summer Nordic, Inc. and can accommodate up to six people for an overnight stay. The name Nokhu is thought to be an abbreviation of the Arapaho word hohlonookee, meaning eagle rock. This is a great place to stay for a couple of nights to explore the area around Lake Agnes, American Lakes, and Thunder Pass. A wood-burning stove supplies heat, and you obtain water by melting snow, so please don’t bring any dogs. Surface quality is ungroomed, but often ski or snowshoe tracked, and avalanche danger is low, but some avalanche terrain is encountered.
