Cuyamaca Peak
Cuyamaca Peak, number two on San Diego County’s roster of high points, lies close to the county’s geographic center. The paved but closed-to-traffic Lookout Rd. is the most direct route to the Cuyamaca’s summit from the highway below. Consider this clear-day scenario: After one hour of driving and one hour of uphill running, you could be gazing down on San Diego Bay or coastal San Diego, having started your journey down there only two hours before. A fire-lookout tower stood on the Cuyamaca summit until the 1980s, when it was replaced by a small complex of telecommunications antennas. Because of that change, the view isn’t as comprehensively panoramic as it could be—but spectacular, nonetheless.
