Pinhoti Trail: Coleman Lake to East Dugger Mountain
This trail segment features the federally designated Dugger Mountain Wilderness. The path begins innocently enough in low pine hills before dropping into the attractive upper Choccolocco Creek watershed. The walking remains easy as the PT passes Choccolocco Lake. Then things change. Enter the Dugger Mountain Wilderness and ascend Red Mountain. Great views await of Dugger Mountain and the Jones Branch watershed. Keep climbing to reach the crest of Dugger Mountain, Alabama’s second highest peak. Plenty of views open up among the trees and rocks. Descend off the mountain to reach a quiet stream, now in the Terrapin Creek watershed, and reach the road. Dugger Mountain was named for Thomas Dugger, a Civil War veteran who moved here from Tennessee, and homesteaded at the foot of the mountain. The mountain was later purchased by the Forest Service, which managed Dugger Mountain as a wilderness study area. Finally, in late 1999, Congress declared the 9,200-acre area a federally designated wilderness.
