On a long ribbon of road, a solitary figure shoots down the hill, before slowly climbing the next. Is this you? Then a light bike, built for speed, is your bicycle choice. Since good, fast rides are the goal, keep your equipment light as well, and to a minimum. Here are some things to consider.
Accessories
-
Bike light— Good to have if you let yourself get caught in the dark.
- Boot material — A dollar bill or an energy bar wrapper can be used to seal a torn tire. See REI's "
Field Fix" section.
-
Cyclometer
-
Cycling gloves— Get padded gloves for greater comfort.
-
Helmet
-
Hydration system— Water bottles or hydration packs work equally well in this setting. However, it's a matter of personal choice. Hydration packs carry more water; water bottles can be stored in their cages.
-
Mini tool kit— Don't go on a short ride without one.
-
On-frame tire pump— Lightweight and versatile, most now come with Presta and Schraeder fittings.
-
Saddlebag— More gear demands more space. Use a larger saddlebag for long road rides.
-
Shoes— Go with the shoe that matches your clipless pedals. A good, stiff sole will help with power transfer.
-
Spare tube or patch kit— Anytime you get out beyond the easy reach of a bike shop, you should carry 2 tubes as well as the patch kit.
-
Wind/Rainwear— A jacket that is wind- and water-resistant can help keep you warm if the weather turns.
-
Snack— Energy bars are the snack of choice. However, a banana, an orange, honey or Fig Newtons work as well.
