Yellowstone Backpacking
Let REI Adventures take you to the remote corners of the world's first National Park! Each of our three backpacking itineraries explores a unique and remote section of the park and provides intimate glimpses into the diversity of Yellowstone. For fit travelers who are new to backpacking or looking for something a bit easier, the Black Canyon route provides the chance to discover the cascades and waterfalls of the mighty Yellowstone River while also offering an opportunity to observe the vast amount of wildlife the park is famous for. Alternately, our Bechler River route, while more of a challenge, delivers an unmatched experience where backpackers witness nature at work through the power of teeming rivers and streams, the wonder of remote geysers and hot springs, and the breathtaking beauty of flower filled meadows. Finally, for those interested in the challenge of big elevation gains at high altitude with the added reward of breathtaking expansive views, our Gallatin Crest Traverse will deliver both in an area largely unknown to travelers. Strap on your pack, lace up your boots and come with us as we follow the remote and majestic trails of Yellowstone National Park.
All Yellowstone backpacking trips are conducted under the authorized concessionaire permit of Outpost Wilderness Adventure.

Comments about REI Adventures Yellowstone Backpacking:
The REI Adventures trip to Bechler River Canyon provided me with the opportunity to enjoy this amazing wilderness, without becoming a slave to the details of back country camping. Our guides were knowledgeable, helpful and [*] fine cooks. REI provided great tents and the transportation to and from Bozeman was excellent. The trip definitely exceeded my expectations. Many Thanks to my amazing guides! And the terrific group I traveled with.

Comments about REI Adventures Yellowstone Backpacking:
The REI description can be a bit confusing if you really would like to have an idea of where you will be hiking. Below was our trip....
Our group put in at the Hellroaring trail head off the main road. We hiked down and across the Yellowstone River to Hellroaring creek. We hiked up stream along Hellroaring creek and crossed Hellroaring via another bridge. We then proceeded downstream to the confluence of the Hellroaring and Yellowstone river. We camped at site 2H1 the first night. Approx 7 miles mostly down hill.
Our second day we hiked along the north banks of the Yellowstone river heading generally west to camp site 1Y9. Approx 6 miles. This was our camp site for nights 2 & 3.
On day 3 we day hiked west and still on the North side of the Yellowstone. We hiked past Crevice lake, Crevice Creek and to Knowles falls. Round trip was approx 8 miles.
On day 4 we left camp 1Y9 and proceeded to a fairly long suspension bridge and cross from the north to the south side of the river. We connected with the Blacktail Deer Creek Trail. This is a fairly steep climb out for us beginners, my guess is about 1,500 over 3 miles give or take. Our adventure ended at the Blackail Deer Creek Trailhead at the main park road.

- Yellowstone is the iconic national park, neither my wife or I had ever visited the park. It seemed a logic place to begin exploring.
- What was the highlight of your trip?:
- I set an alarm for 12 AM the first night to catch the pitch black sky. It was a new moon so the Milky Way was exceptional. See posted picture made from a total of 5, 20 second exposures.

- Listen to your guides and only carry the absolute minimum amount of stuff you NEED.

Comments about REI Adventures Yellowstone Backpacking:
I was sceptical of using trekking poles, but a friend urged me to try them. They were a considerable help on the mountain trails and, especially with the stream crossings. Keep in mind that the average high and low temperatures in the trip description are average. It can easily be significangly colder, warmer or wetter. Bring good rain gear, waterproof your boots, and have a great time.

- Why did you choose this trip?:
- I recently retired and wanted to get back into packpacking, after many years of family car camping and day-hiking. Wanted to start with an organized trip, with experienced guides. I had a great time, found I could keep up with the "young ones", and am very pleased that I went.
- What was the highlight of your trip?:
- The guides, Russ and Jana, were professional, knowledgeable, and really nice people. The other hikers were very congenial. And of course the incredible scenery.
- What would be your advice to potential travelers?:
- Pay attention to the gear list and training recommendations. One of the reasons that I had such a great time, is that I was well prepared. Unexpected snow and cold were surprises, but with the right gear the trip was still a great success.

Comments about REI Adventures Yellowstone Backpacking:
Our guides were superb! We enjoyed talking about the wild flowers and the "evidence" left by the wildlife as we hiked. The mileage on the second day was long but we kept going with some jokes and a trip to Mr Bubbles - the hot spring. Forging the river was something to write home about - at some points the water was waist deep! I know there are mosquitoes in the woods - but they were organised into air squadrons and we needed the industrial strength bug spray. Food was good - and tasted wonderful after a hard days hiking.

- Why did you choose this trip?:
- Hiking through along the Bechler River from Old Faithful to the Bechler Ranger station allowed us access to very remote areas of the park. The itinerary meet our schedule and expected exertion levels.
- What was the highlight of your trip?:
- Hard to single out one point - but some of the water falls were fabulous, taking a dip in the river was fun, forging the rivers was quite an experience.
- What would be your advice to potential travelers?:
- Get the industrial strength bug spray and don't pack anything you don't absolutely need. A heavy pack will make this trip really hard work.

Comments about REI Adventures Yellowstone Backpacking:
Overall, this was a great experience! Asano and Scott were our guides and I don't think we could have asked for better!
They pointed out features as we hiked, related their other experiences, did all the cooking (seriously, who has such food while camping in the woods?? WE DO.) and in general, made sure we had a good time. There was no lack of food or water, and if we chose, could have eaten most of the time while there! There was also a stress on safety and even when crossing streams, they were there to make sure we crossed safely.
The environment: It's Yellowstone. Mountains and rivers, so you can expect incredible scenery to do your hiking in. Especially when crossing suspension bridges, or seeing waterfalls made more awesome with snow melt.
An added bonus was the incredible sky at night! Being from the city, I don't get to see such things often, and I felt this was something that should be mentioned.
In short, I think REI will be seeing us again!

- Why did you choose this trip?:
- I thought this trip would be a good introduction to backpacking, as well as see how REI will work for me.
- What was the highlight of your trip?:
- This was a unique experience so it's a hard call. The views are overwhelmingly beautiful, and just relaxing by the shore of the Yellowstone River, dipping our feet in the cold water after a warm day hike, as the mountains tower over us is perhaps the most memorable.
- What would be your advice to potential travelers?:
- When they say layer up, they mean it! Our first couple of days were cold and our guides were clear about what we would need. So in addition to layering up, listen to the guides!

Comments about REI Adventures Yellowstone Backpacking:
The entire experience of traveling with REI Adventures was truly unforgettable. The food was fantastic, our guide was kind and knowledgeable, and the group dynamic was a lot of fun. What a wonderful way to experience our first national park!
- Why Did You Choose to Travel with REI Adventures?:
- Active Adventures, All the Details Planned for Me, Destination, Good Value, I Liked the Itinerary
- Why did you choose this trip?:
- I chose this trip because after watching Ken Burns' documentary on our national parks, I felt absolutely drawn to Yellowstone. I was intrigued by the Gallatin Crest itinerary because I felt like it offered something a little different than the traditional Yellowstone experience.
- What was the highlight of your trip?:
- Our final night of the trip, we camped at High Lake, the highest lake in the park. We arrived early in the afternoon and enjoyed perfect weather and a frigid (but refreshing!) swim. How many opportunities do you have to swim in the highest lake in Yellowstone, right? That evening we hiked up the crest to watch the sunset. On the way up we hiked through a field of purple lupin, all in bloom and incredibly fragrant. On the crest, the sunset was explosive! I couldn't believe what we were seeing! To top it off, there was a full moon rising over the field behind us, making it the most surreal and unforgettable exchange of night and day in the mountains.
- What would be your advice to potential travelers?:
- Bring mosquito netting! This is a non-negotiable. Our trip was in July, and the bugs really were "that bad."

Where do I begin... Shane and Stefan were outstanding. The scenery met expectations and beyond, the group blended nicely. Stefan is a great cook,I don't eat that good at home. We were in peak wildflower season, the guides were knowledgeable about it all.

Comments about REI Adventures Yellowstone Backpacking:
The best part of spending time in the backcountry is that you get to see Yellowstone, not a boardwalk. You learn things about the country, the park, your abilities, and new people.
While we didn't have the fortune of seeing wildlife, and the sites we stayed at didn't allow campfires, I would take the trip again tomorrow.
Our guides, Stefen and Shane, made sure that this was both a vacation and an adventure. They cooked great food and showed us features of the park that many people may overlook, such as native (and non-native) flowers and plants.

Comments about REI Adventures Yellowstone Backpacking:
Our guides, Stefen and Shane, were excellent: very knowledgeable, approachable, humorous, and accommodating. The meals were delicious—better than what I have at home. We saw lots of flora and fauna (moose, bison, mule deer, elk, pika, ground squirrel, and signs of bear, coyote, and fox) and geological features (the highlights were Lone Star Geyser and Grand Prismatic Spring). It would have been nice to have one more day to really take in Shoshone Lake. Make sure you bring a mosquito net and strong DEET spray—the mosquitoes are nasty. The activity rating (3/4) is on target.
