Death Valley Cycling

Escape to one of the greatest surprises in the West and a biking experience that simply can't be duplicated anywhere else on the planet. Wildlife and wildflowers animate the spaces between salt spires and sand dunes. Death Valley's smooth winding roads oscillate above and below sea level taking us over a land born of fire, rich in minerals and steeped in a curious history. This 3.4 million acre national park is the largest in the United States and known the world over as a geographic rogue; mountains rise to 11,000 feet on either side of the valley that at its deepest resting place holds the honor of being the eighth lowest elevation location on the globe at -282 feet. We explore eclectic Scotty's Castle before our first lunch in the park to get a taste of the stories that originally brought attention to this diverse spread of wilderness. Some of our best rides of the weekend find us skirting the edges of Badwater Basin and climbing around the colorful challenge of Artists Palette. Grasp the vastness of the valley from the top of Dante's View, a lookout point towering 5,500 feet above this dramatic landscape. A weekend spinning wheels through Death Valley will revive the soul and open your mind to the exceptional cycling terrain.

Note on Itinerary

Although we do our very best to adhere to the schedule above, the itinerary is subject to change for numerous reasons beyond our control, including weather and terrain conditions. This trip is operated rain or shine.

Important Information about Air Travel

Contact REI Adventures prior to purchasing your airline tickets to confirm the trip has the minimum number of participants required to operate.

Bicycles

We provide the Trek FX 7.2 Hybrid bike, which is the perfect blend of a fast ride with a familiar, upright riding geometry outfitted for comfort. The Trek sports a hill-flattening 24-speed drivetrain and gel grips for added comfort. Or, you can choose to ride the Giant Defy 2 (Compact Double) Road bike, which features premium lightweight aluminum tubes brilliantly engineered with a tapered fork and head tube, perfectly balancing weight and front end rigidity. Smooth, lively and stable, the Defy delivers all-day comfort.

Bike upgrades are available for an additional cost:

Specialized Roubaix Elite (Double) - $210.00 additional charge:

For road cyclists looking for something with a bit more get-up-and-go. Named after the grueling Paris-Roubaix race it has won four times. Featuring Specialized FACT 7r 8r for 2103 carbon frame and SRAM Apex 10-speed shifting. Shallow drop alloy handlebar for easy access to levers and more comfortable hand positions. This bike is seriously smooth and fast.

Trek Madone 5.2 (Double) - $290.00 additional charge:

This bike offers Trek's OCLV carbon frameset, the ultimate in frame technology. The Madone strikes the perfect balance of weight, stiffness, and compliance. Silky smooth Shimano Ultegra 10-speed shifting, integrated front and rear brakes, and fast and durable Bontrager Race wheels. It's the ideal ride for the discerning cyclist.

Guests are welcome to bring their own bikes for the tour but note that no discount is provided if you do so.

Qualifications

This trip is rated Moderate Plus [3-4] and consists of a combination of moderate and more vigorous cycling covering 13 - 44 miles per day over rolling hills with some longer uphill climbs. All participants should have cycling experience that includes maintaining control of the bike, shifting gears, braking, ascending, descending, cornering, riding in groups, riding with traffic, and knowledge of bicycle safety, in addition to being comfortable in the saddle for 3-7 hours per day. While the majority of the cycling route is on a paved surface, the pavement may be uneven, potholed, or topped with gravel or other debris. Additionally, the inclement weather may affect any riding surface causing debris, or the surface may become slick.

Weather

Contrary to its infamous heat throughout summer, winter and spring weather is very pleasant with mild temperatures during the day (mid 60s – 80s), dropping drastically at night (mid-30s to upper 40s). Though rare in this arid landscape, there is always the possibility of rain, so adequate raingear is important.

General Information

This trip is subject to the booking information set forth in the current REI Adventures Weekend Reservation Information. Please read this information carefully and call us if you have any questions. A full gear list and detailed pre-trip information is sent upon sign-up. We highly recommend the purchase of travel insurance through REI Adventures. If coverage is purchased at the time of your initial reservation, the 'Pre-existing Conditions Exclusion' is waived (certain exclusions apply).

We look forward to having you join us for the trip of a lifetime! Why wait? Space is limited, reserve your adventure today.

The key to staying comfortable while on an active trip is layering. Things to Consider

  • Always pack essential items such as your passport, money, eyewear, a change of clothing and medications in your carry-on baggage in case your luggage is delayed.
  • We recommend bright-colored bicycle clothing for visibility and safety.
  • Always test your clothing layers before a trip. Your outer layer should fit easily over the inside ones without binding.
  • If you are not bringing a shoe and pedal system (optional), you will need a shoe designed for cycling or cross training to be used with the provided flat pedals. Consider these features: lightweight, closed toe, designed with stiffer soles to provide more efficient energy transfer as you pedal. Stiff soles protect your feet while riding and support the full length of your foot to reduce cramping and fatigue.
  • If you bring your own saddle, please bring only the seat and not the seat post. Seat posts are not universal and may not fit the bike you’ll be riding. You are welcome to bring a gel seat cover for use on the provided saddle.
  • Formal attire is not required for dinners. Comfortable, casual clothes are appropriate for sit-down meals. We suggest bringing slacks, shorts that are mid-thigh or longer, skirts, or summer dresses in fabrics that are easy to wash and wear.

Feel free to give us a call at (800) 622-2236 should you have any questions regarding the gear list. The staff at our stores and Direct Sales (800-426-4840) will also be happy to help you with gear questions. Or check out www.rei.com/learn. Comments about REI Adventures Death Valley Cycling:

Three days was great, and I think this could easily be expanded to a 5-day trip that includes some hiking.
Lodging could have been a little better - beds were comfortable but the walls were a little thin.
Staff at restaurant unprepared for large groups, service was never better than mediocre.

        • Why did you choose this trip?:
        • How many chances does an East Coast girl get to bike through Death Valley?
        • What was the highlight of your trip?:
        • The biking, even the hard stuff that I didn't think I could do. Hiking out to the sand dunes. Fantastic, knowledgeable guides, great group camaraderie.

Comments about REI Adventures Death Valley Cycling:

My husband and I took this trip together – our first with REI. We both upgraded to road bikes and were really pleased with the condition of the equipment. The accommodations were just what we needed – a comfortable bed, hot shower, good food, and a good beer list at the bar. Our guides, Nick and Alex, were fantastic and we'd love to have them again. Their enthusiasm, encouragement, and knowledge of the area helped to make the trip an extremely positive experience. My husband is a stronger rider than me, and he conquered every hill while I got a little help from the van when the climb got really steep, but we both had a great time and hope to do the trip again in the future.

            • Why did you choose this trip?:
            • The Weekend Getaway was the perfect length for a cycling trip to a unique location
            • What was the highlight of your trip?:
            • The cycling – peaceful riding on smooth roads with challenging climbs and incredible scenery. The landscape was a little different each day, and in spite of the desolation Death Valley was really beautiful. I came home feeling much more refreshed than I have from any "relaxing" resort vacation.
            • What would be your advice to potential travelers?:
            • Be sure to train ahead of time – the climbs are challenging. Also, bring extra warm clothes. It snowed the first day and was unseasonably cool the whole trip. I wish I had packed more long sleeved shirts for during the day!

The logistics of the trip -- vanning into and out of the park, traveling between park destinations, when to suit up for cycling, etc. -- were very well done, and well communicated.

Comments about REI Adventures Death Valley Cycling:

Having never visited Death Valley before I found it amazingly desolate and barren yet still serenely beautiful. This trip is indeed a perfect 'weekend getaway' from typical urban/suburban life with a good combination of riding and sightseeing. While the rides along the valley are generally flat, the two excursion rides into and up the adjacent mountains are certainly challenging. Fortunately the motel bar is quick to serve up medicinal alcohol if needed at the end of the day to help ease any aches. The REI guides were fantastic and kept our group in a great mood; I hope to have them again on another trip. Highly recommended!

this was my first experience on an REI adventure trip, and i couldn't have been any happier with the organization, the guides, the group, the relaxed atmosphere, and the activities planned. i brought my own bike, so could not comment on the equipment -but it was a great venue for having a road bike. the rides were challenging and the scenery just amazing and unique. a great "long weekend" trip - i'd recommend it to anyone interested in seeing Death Valley on a bike.

My wife and I had a great time on this trip. The guides were wonderful, the terrain was varied and challenging and the laughs amongst the group never stopped. One might expect a bike trip in Death Valley to be too flat and too hot but it was exactly the opposite. I would recommend the trip to anyone interested in an active vacation in a unique and beautiful part of the world.
