  • Stay comfortably in Stove Pipe Wells, a perfect base for adventure
  • Bike 30-50 miles on undulating roads amid classic desert scenery.

Escape to one of the greatest surprises in the West for a biking experience that simply can't be duplicated: Death Valley. This 3.4 million acre national park is the largest in the United States and known the world over as a geographic rogue. Mountains rise 11,000 feet on either side of the valley that also holds the honor of being the eighth-lowest elevation location on the globe at -282 feet.

Death Valley's smooth, winding roads provide the perfect route to discover a land born of fire, rich in minerals, and steeped in a curious history. Some of our best rides of the weekend find us skirting the edges of Badwater Basin and climbing around the colorful challenge of Artist's Palette. Grasp the vastness of the valley from the top of Dante's View, a lookout point 5,500 feet above this dramatic landscape.

A weekend spinning wheels through Death Valley's exceptional cycling terrain revives the soul and opens the mind.

Trip Itinerary and Details

Important Notice: Day 1 is the day you should plan to arrive at the meeting point for the trip. This may require departing your hometown one or more days in advance and traveling on an overnight flight.

  • Day 1 - Meet at REI in Henderson, NV for an orientation.

Meet our guides and fellow trip members at 6:00pm at the REI Henderson store for dinner and trip orientation. This is a good opportunity to shop for any last minute items. We enjoy dinner and drinks while we get to know each other in eager anticipation of our Death Valley adventure. Return transfer to Green Valley Ranch Resort upon completion of the evening. Dinner included. Lodging on your own.

  • Day 2 - Explore quirky Scotty's Castle en route to Stovepipe Wells.

Departing the Green Valley Ranch Resort at 7:00 a.m., we drive to the far northern corner of Death Valley National Park where we explore the famously quirky Scotty's Castle. This unfinished 25 room villa is a creation of the imaginations of two classic characters from the 1920's. Take note of the wild stories of the swindler known as "Death Valley Scotty" and his wealthy friend, Mr. Johnson who constructed Death Valley Ranch for his wife. Fuel up on a light picnic lunch before our bike ride down to Stovepipe Wells. Riding towards our lodging for the next couple of days, we will catch spectacular views of the salt flats and sand dunes of the valley as we drop nearly 3,000' in elevation. Tonight, we dine and sleep at Stovepipe Wells, an oasis in this otherwise parched environment. Lunch and dinner included.

Driving: 3 hours; Cycling: 44 miles; Hours in the saddle: 4; Terrain: rolling hills, mostly downhill with 3,000'+ elev. loss.

  • Day 3 - Pedal to Badwater Basin below sea level and return via Artist Palette.

This morning we pedal and coast to the lowest elevation point in North America, Badwater Basin, resting at 282 feet below sea level. Our ride today is truly spectacular as it passes over a landscape flanked by multi-hued features in dusty pinks, sea greens, ashy purples and moody browns. Savor a tasty guide prepared lunch in the basin and take advantage of a chance to venture out onto the salt flats. Next prepare for a challenging loop around the aptly named Artist's Palette. We will pedal our way through narrow dips and hairpin corners on this smooth, one-way-only road. In the late afternoon we drop our bikes and venture onto the sand dunes. Truly a highlight of the trip, the dunes are an otherworldly sunset experience you won't soon forget. All meals included.

Cycling: Out of Badwater Basin via Artist's Drive, 32 miles with a 950' climb. Hours in saddle: 3-4.

  • Day 4 - Ride to the top of Dante's Peak to savor the park's outlandish beauty!

This morning we shuttle 13 miles up to Dante's View, or pedal if you are up for the challenge. From here, we can ponder the profound contrast of the eighth lowest place on earth immediately adjacent to 11,000+ foot Telescope Peak, the highest point in Death Valley. Unforgettable views help capture the essence of the outlandish landscape that is Death Valley. After indulging in this heavenly vista, we'll descend from Dante's on a breathtaking ride losing thousands of feet along the way! The shuttle will meet us for the return trip to Green Valley Ranch Resort in Henderson, to arrive by 5:00 p.m. Departing flights can be scheduled after 7:00 p.m. Breakfast and lunch included.

    Cycling options: 13 miles with 2,500'+ elev. loss; 18 miles with 1,700' elev. gain / 2,500' loss; 26 miles with a 2,500' elev. gain / 2,500' loss. Hours in the saddle: 3 - 4.

Note on Itinerary

Although we do our very best to adhere to the schedule above, the itinerary is subject to change for numerous reasons beyond our control, including weather and terrain conditions. This trip is operated rain or shine.

Qualifications

This trip is rated Moderate Plus [3-4] and consists of a combination of moderate and more vigorous cycling covering 13 - 44 miles per day over rolling hills with some longer uphill climbs. All participants should have cycling experience that includes maintaining control of the bike, shifting gears, braking, ascending, descending, cornering, riding in groups, riding with traffic, and knowledge of bicycle safety, in addition to being comfortable in the saddle for 3-7 hours per day. While the majority of the cycling route is on a paved surface, the pavement may be uneven, potholed, or topped with gravel or other debris. Additionally, the inclement weather may affect any riding surface causing debris, or the surface may become slick.

Weather

Contrary to its infamous heat throughout summer, winter and spring weather is very pleasant with mild temperatures during the day (mid 60s – 80s), dropping drastically at night (mid-30s to upper 40s). Though rare in this arid landscape, there is always the possibility of rain, so adequate raingear is important.

Single Travelers

If you are traveling alone and specifically request single accommodations, you will be asked to pay the single supplement fee. There is no single supplement fee for those willing to share accommodations, and we will assign you a roommate of the same gender if possible. Please be advised that there are a limited number of single accommodations available.

General Information

This trip is subject to the booking information set forth in the current REI Adventures Weekend Reservation Information. Please read this information carefully and call us if you have any questions. Death Valley Cycling Gear List

The key to staying comfortable while on an active trip is layering. Things to Consider

  • Always pack essential items such as your passport, money, eyewear, a change of clothing and medications in your carry-on baggage in case your luggage is delayed.
  • We recommend bright-colored bicycle clothing for visibility and safety.
  • Always test your clothing layers before a trip. Your outer layer should fit easily over the inside ones without binding.
  • If you are not bringing a shoe and pedal system (optional), you will need a shoe designed for cycling or cross training to be used with the provided flat pedals. Consider these features: lightweight, closed toe, designed with stiffer soles to provide more efficient energy transfer as you pedal. Stiff soles protect your feet while riding and support the full length of your foot to reduce cramping and fatigue.
  • If you bring your own saddle, please bring only the seat and not the seat post. Seat posts are not universal and may not fit the bike you’ll be riding. You are welcome to bring a gel seat cover for use on the provided saddle.
  • Formal attire is not required for dinners. Comfortable, casual clothes are appropriate for sit-down meals. We suggest bringing slacks, shorts that are mid-thigh or longer, skirts, or summer dresses in fabrics that are easy to wash and wear.

Feel free to give us a call at (800) 622-2236 should you have any questions regarding the gear list. The staff at our stores and Direct Sales (800-426-4840) will also be happy to help you with gear questions. Or check out www.rei.com/learn. Comments about REI Adventures Death Valley Cycling:

The guides made homemade cookies and brownies for our picnic lunches. You can't get better customer service than that!

Only downside is not as many miles as some other Death Valley trips.

Comments about REI Adventures Death Valley Cycling:

Three days was great, and I think this could easily be expanded to a 5-day trip that includes some hiking.
Lodging could have been a little better - beds were comfortable but the walls were a little thin.
Staff at restaurant unprepared for large groups, service was never better than mediocre.

          • The biking, even the hard stuff that I didn't think I could do. Hiking out to the sand dunes. Fantastic, knowledgeable guides, great group camaraderie.

Comments about REI Adventures Death Valley Cycling:

My husband and I took this trip together – our first with REI. We both upgraded to road bikes and were really pleased with the condition of the equipment. The accommodations were just what we needed – a comfortable bed, hot shower, good food, and a good beer list at the bar. Our guides, Nick and Alex, were fantastic and we'd love to have them again. Their enthusiasm, encouragement, and knowledge of the area helped to make the trip an extremely positive experience. My husband is a stronger rider than me, and he conquered every hill while I got a little help from the van when the climb got really steep, but we both had a great time and hope to do the trip again in the future.

              • Why did you choose this trip?:
              • The Weekend Getaway was the perfect length for a cycling trip to a unique location
              • What was the highlight of your trip?:
              • The cycling – peaceful riding on smooth roads with challenging climbs and incredible scenery. The landscape was a little different each day, and in spite of the desolation Death Valley was really beautiful. I came home feeling much more refreshed than I have from any "relaxing" resort vacation.
              • What would be your advice to potential travelers?:
              • Be sure to train ahead of time – the climbs are challenging. Also, bring extra warm clothes. It snowed the first day and was unseasonably cool the whole trip. I wish I had packed more long sleeved shirts for during the day!

The logistics of the trip -- vanning into and out of the park, traveling between park destinations, when to suit up for cycling, etc. -- were very well done, and well communicated.

Comments about REI Adventures Death Valley Cycling:

This three day adventure was fun, full of activities and exercise. It was challenging but had ways of making it easier when it became too difficult for my skill level. I would highly recommed this trip to anyone who wants to see a lot of different areas on their bikes. I fully trust REI and their leaders. I am ready for the next adventure!!

Comments about REI Adventures Death Valley Cycling:

Having never visited Death Valley before I found it amazingly desolate and barren yet still serenely beautiful. This trip is indeed a perfect 'weekend getaway' from typical urban/suburban life with a good combination of riding and sightseeing. While the rides along the valley are generally flat, the two excursion rides into and up the adjacent mountains are certainly challenging. Fortunately the motel bar is quick to serve up medicinal alcohol if needed at the end of the day to help ease any aches. The REI guides were fantastic and kept our group in a great mood; I hope to have them again on another trip. Highly recommended!

this was my first experience on an REI adventure trip, and i couldn't have been any happier with the organization, the guides, the group, the relaxed atmosphere, and the activities planned. i brought my own bike, so could not comment on the equipment -but it was a great venue for having a road bike. the rides were challenging and the scenery just amazing and unique. a great "long weekend" trip - i'd recommend it to anyone interested in seeing Death Valley on a bike.

My wife and I had a great time on this trip. The guides were wonderful, the terrain was varied and challenging and the laughs amongst the group never stopped. One might expect a bike trip in Death Valley to be too flat and too hot but it was exactly the opposite. I would recommend the trip to anyone interested in an active vacation in a unique and beautiful part of the world.
