Basic Rock Climbing Rumney Rocks

Rumney Rocks, widely considered the best sport climbing in New England, is also the perfect place for beginners to learn the fundamentals of rock climbing. Our introductory course will focus on teaching basic skills, equipment terminology, rope handling, belaying, knots, and movement on the rock, including proper footwork and hand placements. Rumney is located in the beautiful Baker River valley in the foothills of the scenic White Mountains.

Women’s only (W) departures are limited to four women per group and will include a hike to the summit of Rattlesnake Mountain for a breathtakingly beautiful view of the Baker River valley and the White Mountains

Basic Rock Climbing Rumney Rocks Itinerary:

  • Day 1

Your trip begins today in Plymouth, New Hampshire.  Arrive at the hotel in Plymouth, New Hampshire this evening.  Dinner tonight is on your own and there are many local restaurants near your hotel.  Rest well tonight before our climbing adventure at Rumney Rocks begins!  All meals on your own.

  • Day 2

To start your day, a continental breakfast is available at the hotel. Your guide will meet you in the hotel lobby at 8:00 a.m. and accompany the group to Rumney Rocks, about 8 miles from Plymouth. We will arrive at the climbing area and hike a short distance with our gear to the base of the climbs.  Initially, we’ll be fit for gear and be introduced to climbing terminology, knots, belaying and basic skills.  After the basics are covered and the group is comfortable with essential skills, everyone will have the opportunity to both ascend numerous routes and to belay as we climb all morning. Lunch will be provided by your guides at the climbing area; then groups will return to the rock for more fun and climbing. At the end of the day we’ll return to the hotel in Plymouth.  Dinner tonight is on your own, Plymouth has numerous restaurants for guests to choose between. Instruction and Climbing: 6-7 hours. Breakfast and Lunch included.

**NOTE: Women’s only (W) groups will switch gears after lunch and hike to the summit of Rattlesnake Mountain where we’ll end our day overlooking the Baker River Valley, with spectacular views of the White Mountains of central New Hampshire

  • Day 3

After breakfast and checking out of the hotel we’ll all meet at the Rumney Rocks parking area at 8:00 a.m.  The group will hike to the crag where, with new-found skills, confidence, and strength, we will once again be treated to some of the best sport climbing in the U.S.  We’ll set goals and continue our skills progression, with a special focus on movement and improving our climbing technique.  If time and weather permits, a celebratory dip in a nearby swimming hole concludes the day before saying our goodbyes.  We will return to the trail head by 4:00 p.m. for departures.  Instruction and Climbing: 6-7 hours. Breakfast and Lunch included.
