Canadian Rockies Hiking Plus
Nature has taken eons to shape the Canadian Rockies, and our active adventure explores the best of this dramatic setting. At the renowned nature destinations of Lake Louise, Banff, Yoho and Jasper veteran guides map out the most exciting and scenic routes for hiking, whitewater rafting and canoeing. From our basecamp near Lake Louise, hiking trails take us into grand valleys, alongside turquoise lakes and up onto ridgelines with amazing vistas of jagged peaks. Our pace quickens in Yoho with a heart-pounding whitewater raft trip through Kicking Horse Canyon. Then it's a hike onto the immense Columbia Icefields, the highlight of Jasper National Park. A final hike to the stunning panorama surrounding Stanley Glacier in Kootenay National Park wraps up this week of exploring some of the best mountain scenery in the world. As our head guide says, "This is what I would show my friends if they had a week in the Rockies!" Join us for a memorable hiking vacation.

Things to Consider
- Pack essential items such as your passport, money, eyewear, a change of clothing (including hiking boots), and medications in your carry-on baggage in case your luggage is delayed.
- Your clothing and gear will be stored in your tent so it is best to pack into a frameless duffel bag. Use different sizes/colors of stuff sacks to differentiate contents.
- Wind chill can be a significant factor on this trip. Daytime air temperatures are not very cold, but when combined with the stress that altitude puts on your body, you can be robbed of body heat quickly. Wind and rain gear are both very important. A warm insulating jacket or down vest is important to bring in addition to other layers as night will be chilly in the mountains.
- Cotton is wonderful in warm weather. However, once it becomes wet, it will drain your body heat. Bring wool or synthetics such as Capilene, MTS and Thermax.
- Make sure boots are broken-in and bring moleskin, Second Skin® or Blister Block® for foot treatment. Thin liner socks made of silk or synthetic fibers worn under regular hiking socks may minimize the risk of blisters. Test your sock combination before you go on the trip.
- Plenty of trail snacks are provided each day but you are welcome to bring your favorite snacks or drink mixes.
- A good quick-drying travel towel option is the REI MultiTowel or similar. See www.rei.com for details.

Comments about REI Adventures Canadian Rockies Hiking Plus:
This was one of the best vacations I have had. If you are thinking about going on this trip, definitely go! I went the last week of July and the weather was absolutely amazing--cool and sunny. It was wonderful to share this experience with other like-minded travelers who enjoyed being active. The activity level for the trip was perfect and I really enjoyed the multi-sport aspect of the trip-- the canoeing and white water rafting. The canoeing on Emerald Lake was a nice change of pace and allowed us to enjoy the beauty of the area from a different perspective. The white water rafting on the Kicking Horse river was the most thrilling and exciting rafting I've done. The guides—Jeanie and Chris—were phenomenal. They did their best to make sure that everybody's needs and expectations in the group were met. They were well organized, personable, they always had a positive attitude, and they are extremely knowledgeable about the Canadian Rockies and Canada. They took us on incredible awe-inspiring scenery hikes and I learned a lot about Canada from them. I wish they also led a trip in Whistler—I would go on it in a heartbeat.

- Why did you choose this trip?:
- I have wanted to visit the Canadian Rockies for a long time and I love hiking, being active, and being outdoors
- What was the highlight of your trip?:
- The amazing scenery and the incredible white water rafting. Every hike led to something spectacular--waterfalls, blue/green/aqua lakes, majestic mountain peaks, and glaciers. There is literally beauty everywhere! In addition, the white water rafting on the Kicking Horse river was unbelievably fun--it was the best white water rafting I've done.
- What would be your advice to potential travelers?:
- Make sure you have a warm sleeping bag; it can get pretty cold at night. Also, keep the amount of scented toiletries you need to bring to a minimum---these will need to be stored in the trailer because they attract animals and there is limited space in the trailer.

Comments about REI Adventures Canadian Rockies Hiking Plus:
The guides, Chris and Jeannie, were excellent. They were very organized, communicated clearly, had great senses of humor, and did a great job in trying to ensure the trip met every individual's needs. For example, they always offered me extra hiking to meet my activity level desires, and made sure to provide me with maps since they knew I loved to know exactly where we were going. The food was very good and plentiful. I especially appreciated all of the fresh fruits and veggies and plentiful coffee in the morning! Chris and Jeannie know the area so well and are very successful in choosing the right hike for the weather and group's ability to make the most of each day. I also appreciated their care for the environment and leave-no-trace ethics.
