Heart of the Amazon Voyage
Amazon Nature Tours takes you by river boat into some of the most remote, untouched rainforest in the Amazon. You’ll venture far up the Rio Negro, the least-inhabited river in the Amazon Basin, and explore areas rarely visited by outsiders. Led by accomplished naturalist guides you’ll see creatures almost never seen by other visitors—in fact, the experience is something like being in a time machine, as you are able to explore places that have not changed for millions of years. Your Amazon cruise vessel Tucano (Toucan in Portuguese) has comfortable cabins with twin or bunk beds and private baths, along with air-conditioned cabins and dining salon. Small groups (a maximum of 18 passengers), trained naturalist guides and a thoughtful itinerary allow for a genuine, thrilling experience of the Amazon rainforest. It’s truly the trip of a lifetime.
Important Notice: Day 1 is the day you should plan to arrive at the
meeting point for the trip. This may require departing your hometown one or more
days in advance and traveling on an overnight flight.
Heart of the Amazon Voyage Itinerary:
Day 1 Board your river cruise boat, the Tucano, and begin your Amazon voyage along the Rio Negro in search of amazing wildlife.
Day 2 There's no mistaking a howler monkey's call. Hearing them is easier than spotting them.
Day 3 The morning is a perfect time to scout for wildlife and during the heat of the day the Tucano will travel up river.
Days 4 We'll set foot in a new forest setting and see a large concentration of birds, mammals and plant life all due to the rich soil.
Days 5 Discover how plants and animals have evolved in the rainforest and how dependent they can be on their environment.
Days 6 It’s a jungle walk in the morning, strolling the streets of the small town of Novo Airão at midday and a Caipirinha party at night—it can only be done on the Rio Negro!
Day 7 See the meeting of two great rivers today - the mighty Amazon and Nego and explore this fabulously rich environment.
Day 8 Disembarkation today.
Please note that the day to day schedule must be considered approximate. The exact order of the days and specific features may be altered due to navigational and other scheduling considerations. If guests are interested in a city tour of Manaus, it can be arranged on the last day of the cruise after disembarkation as an optional add-on.
If you are traveling alone and are willing to share a cabin, we will assign a roommate if one is available. If we are unable to assign a roommate, you will not be required to pay an additional fee. Passengers that request single accommodations pay a single supplement for the Green category cabin. Single accommodations are limited. The single cabins are the smallest on the vessel.
All accommodations; guided excursions; all meals as noted in the daily itinerary and bottled water.
Airfare to Brazil, airport transfers; visa fees; soft drinks or alcoholic beverages; guide gratuities; items of a personal nature; excess baggage charges or insurance of any kind.
There are two cabin categories on the M/Y Tucano. Green category cabins have bunk beds with upper and lower berths. Yellow category cabins are larger and have beds side by side.
A special cancellation policy applies to this cruise. Please note that this policy is stricter than REI Adventures’ standard policy. A non-refundable deposit of $400 is required to confirm your berth. Full payment is due 90 days prior to your departure. When a trip cancellation is received between 90-61 days prior to the cruise, 50% of the trip cost will be refunded. For cancellations made within 60 days of the cruise all trip costs are 100% non-refundable.
The Amazon Basin, or better known as Amazonia, receives the most rain in all of Brazil, but the refreshing showers are usually seen as a godsend. Amazonia is not nearly as hot as most people imagine. The average temperature is 81°F, but it is humid. The average daytime temperature in the rainy season is in the mid 80’s with nighttime lows in the mid 70’s to high 60’s. The rainy season roughly runs from mid-December to mid-May, the temperature is a bit cooler than the June-December dry season, though overall there is only a five degree average temperature difference between months. The wet season is a time when plants fruit and flower which attracts birds and primates to the water’s edge. The dry season brings lower waters that expose sandy beaches and is the time for beach birds and caimans to nest. It is also when migratory fish lay eggs in the shallow waters that attract the tropical fishing birds.
This trip is rated Easy Active [2]. Passengers must be able to step from the launch to the boat or shore (helping hands are always available). While guests can have a quite enjoyable trip by simply staying on board TUCANO and participating in launch excursions, participants in the walks in the forest must be able to comfortably walk for two or more hours at a time in very hot and humid conditions. Participants should be in good physical condition and consider beginning a regular exercise regimen 1-2 months prior to departure consisting of walking/hiking, running and/or swimming to prepare for this adventure. The better shape you're in, the more you'll be able to take advantage of all the excursions off the boat.

Heart of the Amazon Voyage
The key to staying comfortable while on an active trip is layering. To get maximum comfort with minimum weight, you need versatile layers that mix and match to create the right amount of insulation, ventilation and weather protection. This gear list has been created to help you in choosing your equipment for the trip. Try to bring only what is necessary, as this will help you and the field staff.

Things to Consider
- Please remember to always pack essential items such as your passport, money, eyewear, hiking boots, a pair of shorts/shirt/fleece top/sandals and medications in your carry-on baggage, in case your luggage is delayed.
- Cotton is wonderful in warm weather. However, due to the humidity in the Amazon, quick-dry synthetic materials, such as such as Capilene®, MTS® and Thermax®, will hold up to humid conditions.
- Bring clothing that is lightweight and protects you from the sun. It is always good to have a lightweight, long-sleeve jacket, especially for the evenings. Muted earthtone colors are best for wildlife viewing.
- Always test your layers before a trip. Your outer layer should fit easily over the inside ones without binding and bunching up.
- Make sure boots are broken-in. Bring moleskin for foot treatment. Thin liner socks worn under regular hiking socks may minimize the risk of blisters. The liner sock should be synthetic, not cotton. Test your sock combination before you go on the trip.
- Plastic bags are great for keeping clothing and gear dry. Use Ziploc bags to keep wet clothes separate from dry clothes.
- If you wear prescription glasses, use a safety cord and bring an extra pair if possible. Contact lens wearers should also bring an extra set, or bring eyeglasses for a backup.
- Space for luggage is limited. Pack light, fitting all clothing into one duffel bag. During the day, plan on carrying a small daypack with sunscreen, raingear, water bottle/hydration system and camera.

Comments about REI Adventures Heart of the Amazon Voyage:
We had never been on a group tour, so we didn't know what to expect. That probably helps: go in with a mind that whatever you see or do is exactly perfect. Weather affects your itinerary (rain at night? We stayed on the boat and were wonderfully entertained with native stories by one of our guides), so relax and enjoy each day for what it is. The guides are self-taught naturalists of the highest caliber, patient, and speak excellent English; yet, some of our fellow travelers persisted in correcting their English or otherwise demeaning them. It is very sad that these folks did not represent Americans very well with their actions.

- Why did you choose this trip?:
- We wanted an Amazon trip that got us away from other tours, with a small group, and one where we could experience the sights, sounds, and smells of the rain forest without competing with folks who were day-tripping.
- What was the highlight of your trip?:
- How to choose? Listening (and not seeing, which made it even better)howler monkeys deep in the jungle? Catching (and eating) piranha? Watching dawn from the top deck? Silently paddling at night seeking sloths, snakes, and goat suckers?
- What would be your advice to potential travelers?:
- Learn a few Portuguese phrases. The crew speaks almost no English, yet they are warm and friendly and I would have liked to communicate with them a little better. Understand this is an eco-tour, you are up early, so don't expect dancing on the top deck at night. Most of us were in bed by 9:30!

Comments about REI Adventures Heart of the Amazon Voyage:
There are NO mosquitoes on the River Negro, so don't worry about bringing lots of bug spray. One small bottle - just to be safe - is plenty. Do bring a good poncho - when it rains there it rains HARD. A cover for your camera bags is critical as well - you might be out in the canoes when the rain starts and you WILL get wet. The rooms on the boat were great - but if you can afford the yellow cabins get them. The bunk bed rooms are small and with bunks there is no good place to sit. The boat is small with no lounge room - so you are either in the dining room, your bedroom, or if not raining you can sit on the top deck.
- Why did you choose this trip?:
- Good timing for our school break. Sounded like a fun adventure.
- What was the highlight of your trip?:
- We saw a sloth walking on a beach one day - that was really cool. We loved the pirana fishing day. We enjoyed meeting some of the local people when we went to villages. The early morning canoe rides and the hikes were my favorite.
- What would be your advice to potential travelers?:
- This is a fantastic trip but go with a realistic set of expectations. You should expect to see wonderful scenery and lots of birds, but any other animal you see is a bonus. Prepare to get up early (5:20am every day) for the early adventure canoe rides - but they were great. So quite and peaceful.

Plan to use US currency to pay for your 'bar bill' on the boat and also for tipping the crew and guides. This makes it easier than having to obtain Brazilian reals before leaving.

The tour guides were top notch. From a native Brazilian to a resident who'd been there for over 20 years, we learned more than we thought possible about nature, culture and interesting natural medical cures. Beautiful scenery, great boat, amazing boat staff that catered to our needs. Couldn't have asked for me. We also lucked out and didn't have a drop of rain.

Comments about REI Adventures Heart of the Amazon Voyage:
The trip was utterly amazing. Our guides were very knoledgeable and answered all our questions. Every day brought new adventures and experiences. Our rooms were always clean by the time we returned from our morning trip. The food was always fresh and well-prepared. Everyone was friendly and wanted us to have a wonderful experience which we did.

- Why did you choose this trip?:
- I was looking for an adventure to the non-tourist locations in Brazil.
- What was the highlight of your trip?:
- There were so many that I can't name just one! But I wouldn't have seen as much without such great guides. The variety of bird life was amazing. The daily hikes were adventurous, tiring and invigorating all at the same time. Seeing the stars at night (without any city lights) was breathtaking.
- What would be your advice to potential travelers?:
- Be patient and flexible. We had a morning of rain follwed by a beautiful rainbow. Bring an easy to use, lightweight camera with a strong flash, good telephoto lens, lots of memory and extra batteries. It is challenging to take pictures of a moving object from a rocking canoe. You can rinse your clothes and hang them on the clothesline on the upper deck after each hike. It's also helpful to bring an extra towel to have on hand. Although there aren't many mosquitoes on the Rio Negro, some people were bitten by chiggers so it's good to have a decent supply of insect repellent. Don't worry if you have dietary restrictions. The cook was easily able to feed vegetarians and people on low-fat diets in our group. I purchased some handmade items at a couple of the local villages. You need Brazilian currency since they do not take credit cards and there is no place to exchange money.

Getting to and from Brazil is an adventure in itself. [...]Airlines is in financial difficulty for many reasons. The Brazilian visa process is time-consuming and expensive, but is worth the effort.

- Why did you choose this trip?:
- Our biannual trip at Christmas is a family tradition. I wanted an adventure that all, grandparents, parents and kids ages 5,7,and 9, would always remember.
- What was the highlight of your trip?:
- One night a local fisherman had caught an anaconda when he was on the river. He brought it to our canoes on our after-dinner adventure, and four men untied it. We were all able to touch this gigantic 12 foot snake. They later released it into the wild.
- What would be your advice to potential travelers?:
- Be open to new experiences and do not be on a diet. The food is outstanding!
