Trip Itinerary and Details

Important Notice: Day 1 is the day you should plan to arrive at the meeting point for the trip. This may require departing your hometown one or more days in advance and traveling on an overnight flight.

  • Day 1 - Arrive in Croatia's lively capital, Zagreb.

Arrive in Zagreb, Croatia by 4:00 p.m. and transfer on your own to our hotel. Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, is a lively and colorful city and is reasonably manageable on foot. Our hotel is well located for exploring the city's main attractions. At 6:00 p.m. we will meet in the hotel lobby and get to know our guides and fellow travelers over a welcome drink. The guides will provide a brief orientation to discuss the upcoming itinerary. All meals on your own.

  • Day 2 - Hike around the emerald pools of Plitvice Lakes National Park.

We drive to Plitvice Lakes National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Croatia's premiere inland destination. Today we explore the park's spectacular karst landscape - a sequence of 16 turquoise lakes linked together with cascading falls and travertine pools. The lakes are surrounded by beech and pine forests and are home to extensive wildlife. We enjoy a picnic lunch along the trail. This evening we retire to the tiny village of Korana located in a picture-postcard riverside setting near Plitvice Park. Weather permitting our village hosts prepare a riverside barbeque. All meals included.

Drive time: ~ 2.5 hours; Hiking: 4-6 miles; Terrain: Easy, well marked paths.

  • Day 3 - Bike by pastoral villages and unspoiled landscapes near Plitvice Lakes.

Today is all about exploring the lovely pastoral Croatian countryside by bicycle. We cycle roads that are nearly traffic free around Rakovica, a community founded in the Middle Ages and known historically for the 1871 uprising led by Eugen Kvaternik. While unsuccessful, it was the first attempt to win independence for the state of Croatia. Cycling through traditional villages, we come to Barac’s Caves, where we stop to explore the cave’s fascinating karsts formations. According to the oral tradition of the local people, a man named Barac fought heroically and defeated a raging Turkish giant near these caves which were thereafter named in his honor. Along the way, we stop for a tasty lunch in a local village. Relax this evening in Korana Village while enjoying a traditional supper. All meals included.

    Cycling: 4 hours, ~20 miles; Terrain: Rolling hills with one steep hill;
    Additional cycling: ~6 miles (optional).

  • Day 4 - Kayak the clear, green waters of the Zrmanja and Kupa rivers.

After saying goodbye to our village hosts we continue south to the "Wild West" narrow canyons of the Zrmanja and Kupa Rivers. We visit the medieval Kupa Monastery en route. Built in 1317 by monks from Bosnia, it is the oldest orthodox monastery in Croatia. Once at the river and after a short instructional introduction to paddling (watercraft may be raft or sit-upon kayaks depending upon the river conditions), we push off for an afternoon of refreshing fun on the clear, warm and green waters of these Croatian rivers, considered two of the most beautiful in Europe. Waterfalls and easy rapids, hidden swimming pools, steep sided canyons and, very likely, no one else on the river but our group – it doesn't get better than this! We overnight in the coastal city of Novigrad which has retained its Mediterranean architecture. All meals included.

Drive time: ~ 2.5 hours; Kayaking or rafting: Class I/II rapids, 3-4hours.

  • Day 5 - Hike in Paklenica National Park and eat a lunch from "under the bell."

Less than an hour's drive from Novigrad is Paklenica National Park, part of a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve and a favorite hiking destination for the locals. Lying on the southeast slopes of the Velebit Mountains near the coast and cut by two awe-inspiring gorges, Mala Paklenica and Velika, Paklenica's scenery is one of the most pristine in the whole Mediterranean. The lofty peaks making up this range offer huge views of both coastal and mountain scenery. There are several wonderful hikes through beech and black pine forests to choose from depending upon weather and other factors. One possibility is the trail leading to Borisov Dom, a high mountain hut popular with alpinists. We return to Novigrad for the evening. Breakfast and lunch included; dinner on your own.

Drive time: ~45 minutes; Hiking: 8 miles; elevation gain 1,000'- 2,000', optional 2,800'.

  • Day 6 - Discover bays and beaches while kayaking around Vrgada Island.

Croatia has more than 3,500 miles of stunning coastline dotted with 1,700 islands of all descriptions. Our morning begins with a short ride on a local wooden boat to the small island of Vrgada where we enjoy a day of kayaking. This lovely island has no cars, no hotels and has one of the finest sandy beaches you'll ever dig your toes into. Paddling comfortable sit-upon kayaks we explore the bays and the beaches while having ample time to swim in the clear azure waters, bask in the sun and savor a beach picnic. This evening we transfer to the town of Skradin, located near the Krka River and at the entrance to the Krka National Park. Inhabited by Croatians since the 9th century, Skradin is a romantic Mediterranean town with narrow paved streets and a picture-perfect marina. Breakfast and lunch included; dinner on your own.

    Kayaking: 3 hours.

  • Day 7 - Explore Krka National Park's extensive waterways before going to Trogir.

A last day of exploring takes us to Krka National Park with its fantastic karst formations and travertine waterfalls. We explore the park's extensive waterways and complex history dating back to late 10th century and the first Croatian kings. We have the option to visit Skradinski buk waterfall, the place where the second hydro plant in the world was built, just a few years after the one on Niagara Falls. In the afternoon we drive to Trogir and spend the remainder of the day exploring in the old town. We gather for a farewell dinner to celebrate our amazing adventure. All meals included.

Drive time: ~ 1 hour; Hiking: 3-6 miles; Terrain: Well marked paths.

  • Day 8 - Say farewell to Croatia or continue on our Dubrovnik extension.

Following breakfast, your REI Adventures trip in Croatia concludes. Transfer on your own from our accommodations in Trogir to the international airport at Split (~3.5 miles) for return flights home. Or, continue your time in Croatia by joining us for a 5-day Dubrovnik Hiking and Kayaking Extension! Breakfast included.

Explore even more. See the Dubrovnik Hiking & Kayaking trip extension.

Things to Consider

  • Please remember to always pack essential items such as your passport, money, eyewear, a change of clothing, hiking boots and medications in your carry-on baggage, in case your luggage is delayed.
  • Cotton is wonderful in warm weather. However, once it becomes wet from rain, water, or sweat, it will drain your body heat. Bring quick-drying synthetics such as Capilene, MTS and Thermax.
  • Always test your layers before a trip. Your outer layer should fit easily over the inside ones without binding and bunching up.
  • Make sure hiking boots are broken in. Bring moleskin for foot treatment. Thin liner socks worn under regular hiking socks may minimize the risk of blisters. The liner sock should be synthetic, not cotton. Test your sock combination before you go on the trip.
  • Stuff sacks are great for sorting gear. Use different sizes/colors to differentiate contents.
  • Laundry facilities are not readily available during this trip. We suggest hand washing quick-drying clothing items in your hotel room. Bringing individual detergent packets and a travel clothes-line is useful.
  • When visiting some churches in Croatia, it is necessary to reasonably cover your arms and legs. Beachwear and tank tops are not appropriate attire; shorts should be of mid-thigh length or longer.
  • Required gear for paddling and cycling is provided.
  • If joining the Dubrovnik extension, there are no special or additional clothing needs

Feel free to give us a call at (800) 622-2236 should you have any questions regarding the gear list. Comments about REI Adventures Croatia Multisport and Dubrovnik Extension:

Two things made this trip memorable for me: My fellow adventurers, and our guides - neither of which, I realize, I had any control over. The guides were concerned with our safety at all times, but were also fun, humorous, accommodating, knowledgeable, and obviously very proud of Croatia. In addition to the hiking, biking and kayaking, they incorporated other activities to supplement our experience, e.g., a cave tour, visiting locals to learn some of their history, and visiting ruins. We had a couple of evenings where we were free to do whatever we wanted, and our guides offered their time and knowledge, e.g., the best place to get ice cream! I think, for the most part, Croatia is a beautiful country, and I highly recommend this trip - but be prepared for daily activities.

      • Why Did You Choose to Travel with REI Adventures?:
      • Active Adventures, All the Details Planned for Me, Destination, Travel with Like-minded Outdoor Enthusiasts
      • Why did you choose this trip?:
      • I had seen photos of Croatia, and wanted to personally see the beautiful sites. Additionally, I like active vacations, and the hiking, biking and kayaking activities certainly met my requirements.
      • What was the highlight of your trip?:
      • I enjoyed the kayaking, as this is something I do infrequently - I definitely got my fill! I especially liked interacting with the locals, e.g., staying in family homes, eating home cooked meals, and drinking home brewed rakias.
      • What would be your advice to potential travelers?:
      • In retrospect, I wish I had taken a GoPro camera, especially for the biking. The route passes through beautiful countryside, and if possible, I would have stopped frequently to take photos. Additionally, I advise taking a dry bag for wet clothing, as sometimes it will not have a chance to dry before packing for the next stop.

Everything was great. This trip exceeded my expectations! I went from 9-19 to 9-27. I'm glad I brought long sleeves and a jacket. The temperature was great during the day being sunny and in the mid 70's. There was a couple of mornings and evenings where the jacket was came in handy.

          • What was the highlight of your trip?:
          • The beautiful sights while hiking, kayaking and cycling. The hike in Paklenica was the most challenging of them all and the afternoon meal with Mario was great. He played his accordion, sang and was a great host.
          • What would be your advice to potential travelers?:
          • Bring gloves for kayaking if you're not an avid kayaker. Depending on your fitness level, the cycling might be a challenge.

Comments about REI Adventures Croatia Multisport and Dubrovnik Extension:

Our main guide, Davar, was a gem. He is professional, fun, organized, caring, has a great command of English, was accomodating, knew when to push and when to back off, was a good driver, worked tirelessly, was flexible, was interesting, funny, intelligent and just a good man all the way around. The second guide, Matijes, did his job and I will leave it at that.

            • Why Did You Choose to Travel with REI Adventures?:
            • All the Details Planned for Me
            • Why did you choose this trip?:
            • Never been there and always wanted to go. I travel independently and worldwide but decided to go rather late in the game and this seemed like the easiest way to go.Like the idea that if you have to go in a group, it is a small group of like-minded outdoor enthusiasts.
            • What was the highlight of your trip?:
            • The visits to the small family homes for lunches and the opportunity to meet locals and stay in small walkable villages. I liked that we tended to avoid the cities (Dubrovnik and Split felt like an affront to the senses with all of the people and cruise ship folks).
            • What would be your advice to potential travelers?:
            • Bring quick dry synthetic pants/shorts/tops (you will often be wet). Bring Tevas (some people had flip flops as their "water shoes" and that won't work). Bring a lightweight, breathable rainjacket and a raincover for your daypack.Bring a travel towel. Bring paddling gloves. Bring a decent first aid kit with: Benadryl and After Bite (a lot of yellow jackets and there were a fair number of stings), Immodium (someone will need it), Mucinex or some other cold medicine (you are in a group and someone will likely arrive with a cold and spread it!), tylenol, Zinc tablets (to fend off a cold etc), a Z pack or Cipro, and bandaids etc.. You don't need two water bottles. Drinking water is good throughout Croatia and you will have the opportunity to refill. Don't bring sundresses or anything "nice" to change into in the evening. It won't happen. Be prepared that if you go as a single traveller, you will pay a supplement but your room will often will the worst with regard to location etc. Make sure to bring Croakies or some other band to hold your sunglasses in place. You will have laundry opportunities (the hotel has a service) on day 4/5. The extension is much more low key and not nearly as physical. Often times during the main trip we were staying in various small homes in a village (many families take in guests to help rebuild after the war) but you definitely have privacy and more often than not, you have the entire house to yourselves. I liked that we were spread out somewhat. I prefer not to be with everybody 24/7.Get to Zagreb 3 days earlier and get setlled in and over your jetlag. The Dubrovnik Hotel is sterile and without charm. I spent three days in the nearby Jagerhorn Hotel. It is about the same price but a much more inviting hotel. Croatia is fabulous. The only down side is the abundance of smokers everywhere. This is a great trip.

Comments about REI Adventures Croatia Multisport and Dubrovnik Extension:

Looking back at the photos, I can't believe all we did. The itinerary was an ideal combination of cultural and outdoor activities, with a little history and a lot of fun. We were fortunate to have great weather, but our group and our guide Matko made the trip perfect. Matko is proud to share his heritage, was fully capable on the road, trail and water, and went out of his way to keep us entertained and comfortable. The crowds at Plitvice Lakes and Skradinski Buk were somewhat annoying, but M. tried to steer us away from them when possible. He set the bar pretty high: we are almost afraid to try another REI tour because it is hard to believe we could have an equally good experience somewhere else. We toured Zagreb, Split and Dubrovnik outside of the tour and still felt like we were leaving Croatia too soon. Our only regrets: not learning more Croatian ahead of time so that we could have more interaction with our local meal hosts/cooks and not bringing more rakije home with us.

                    • Why did you choose this trip?:
                    • Liked the multi-sport aspect, and we wanted to visit Croatia.
                    • What would be your advice to potential travelers?:
                    • One water bottle was enough for us, there were ample places to refill during all of the activities. Two bathing suits would be a good idea given the amount of swimming. We were glad we brought beach towels: they took up a lot of space but were welcome given the cool air after swimming.

Comments about REI Adventures Croatia Multisport and Dubrovnik Extension:

The guides were great -- very accommodating and helpful, as well as knowledgable. The food is good too and the rooms are clean. If you're requesting a room with 2 beds, beware-- sometimes one person may be sleeping on a pullout couch that is caved in with coils in your back. The places we stayed were overall OK, but some weren't the best (the 3 nights at apartments on the extension). It would be nice if the whole group could stay at the same place, or even in places next to each other instead of in different locations. Also it would be nice to stay right in Dubrovnik instead of in Zaton (very small town). We also would have liked more down time, esp in the evenings to go out on the town, or just relax at a cafe. About the extension: I don't feel that it's worth the cost. It's only 4 days of activities, and at that point you really need a down day since the physical activities start wearing on you. Seeing Dubrovnik and the islands are definite "must-do's", but that can be easily done on your own. A suggestion to REI would be to do away with the extension and make the regular trip a bit longer. You can skip Mostar (Bosnia) since all you really see there is a bridge. We only need to kayak around an island 1 day (instead of 2), and dedicate a whole day to Dubrovnik, to explore and have some free time. I'm glad I did this trip though and you really get to see all the important parts of Croatia, and can come back and visit those you want to see again.

                      • Why did you choose this trip?:
                      • To see a country I've heard so much about in a part of the world that I know very little about. Plus the multisport itinerary was nice; you didn't do the same thing everyday. I also chose this trip because of it includes a lot of cultural activities, which are important to me when going to a new country
                      • What was the highlight of your trip?:
                      • Seeing Plitvice National Park, whitewater kayaking (fun, not hard), having lunches with locals and seeing how they live, learning about the recent war and history of that part of Europe, great guides, going to Zadar, eating gelato almost everyday, having a few meals on our own to try local cuisine, seeing the turquoise water of the Adriatic and visiting Dubrovnik
                      • What would be your advice to potential travelers?:
                      • You don't need 2 water bottles -- one is more than sufficient. Biking or workout gloves might come in handy for the days of kayaking -- got some blisters on my hands. Be prepared for rainy or cool weather too. The activity level is about right for a Level 3, but some days are more difficult than others -- the day of biking was quite challenging so you might want to prepare for that.

Comments about REI Adventures Croatia Multisport and Dubrovnik Extension:

                          I *highly* recommend this trip!

I wish I had been in slightly better shape before going - the biking (definitely my weak spot) was pretty tough for me, and the hiking and kayaking parts definitely had their challenges. However, I was able to keep up for the most part and luckily most people on the trip weren't in any rush - you gotta soak up the environment and take lots of pictures, right?

The guides on our trip were amazing - taking good care of us and providing local flair to the trip as well. Their knowledge of the area and ability to get us into spots regular tourists wouldn't know about was invaluable. Plus they were so fun and regularly hung out with us after activities which led to extra bonding!

I do wish I had brought gloves for kayaking - I had brutal blisters after the first time on the trip, and I was glad I threw in a sweatshirt at the last moment (it was rainy and kinda cold in Korana - our first two nights of the trip). I also had a number of sundresses with me for after the trip (I explored some of the islands with a friend) which I wore for dinners on the trip - but someone on the trip did mention that she wish she had known we'd have time to shower and "clean up" before most of the dinners together.

Finally, I highly recommend spending extra time in the country after the trip! No one on our trip opted for the extension, which sounded amazing, so I met up with a friend to explore Dubrovnik and nearby islands on our own. Croatia is SO beautiful and there is so much to do there - I was very disappointed to have to leave to return to reality!

                          • Why did you choose this trip?:
                          • A few reasons: Croatia was always on my bucket list of top destinations; the activities sounded fun and not too strenuous; and I loved the idea of local guides who could personalize the trip and show us a side of the country I wouldn't find on my own.
                          • What was the highlight of your trip?:
                          • There were so many: having a fabulous lunch from Marijo at the end of our tough (but worth it!) hike in Paklenica National Park; drinking homemade wine with the guides at a super cute local spot after dinner in Skradin; bonding with the group over a card game the first couple nights in Korana...
                          • What would be your advice to potential travelers?:
                          • Bring gloves! The blisters from the first time kayaking were still hurting when we kayaking the second time. Also, bring cards - I brought a very small (easy-to-pack) card game for up to 18 people which was a great way to bond with the group the first few nights of the trip.

Comments about REI Adventures Croatia Multisport and Dubrovnik Extension:

Croatia's beauty is beyond imagining. I grew up in Alaska and set the bar very high for pristine country. There are definite advantages in terms of the environment to being an "underdeveloped" country. Our guide was excellent. He not only loves the outdoors but is highly skilled, especially kayaking and rafting. The day we spent on the river was amazing. We didn't see another person let alone another boat on our entire river trip. We swam, we paddled over exciting rapids (our guide said Class 2 and 3) we jumped off ledges into the river. It was a day of pure joy. Another huge highlight was enjoying regional cuisine prepared for us in the countryside and served outdoors. We were served homemade prosciutto, homemade cheese, homemade wine!

                            • My husband wanted me to plan a trip to Croatia, but he was mainly interested in the coast. This trip encompassed both.

                            • There were so many! Each destination seemed unsurpassable in terms of beauty. The hike in Paklenica Nat'l Park was wonderful. I love getting up high in the mountains. The rocks in Croatia are amazing. This park is a big climbing destination but even if you are "just" a hiker you will love the landscape. To top it off our meal at the top was fabulous. Mario cooked and sang for us!
                            • What would be your advice to potential travelers?:
                            • If you are sensitive to cigarette smoke, Croatia will be a challenge for you. They seem to smoke here even more than Italy. Although I hate cigarette smoke and had two nights in sheets that reeked of smoke (although they were clean) I would STILL highly recommend this trip.

Comments about REI Adventures Croatia Multisport and Dubrovnik Extension:

While Croatia is a "new" destination for Americans, it has been heavily-traveled by Europeans for quite some time, and as a result, there are areas that are quite touristy, particularly Dubrovnik. REI did a terrific job of keeping us off the beaten path by choosing local (always comfortable) accommodations and numerous in-home restaurants, which gave me a better feel for the country. The food was an unexpected highlight of the trip, especially the lunches, which except for one were NOT quick, on-the-go picnics. The guides were warm, friendly, and highly knowledgeable, and they did a nice job of adjusting the itinerary when bad weather interfered with the original plan. This isn't a super-active trip. Expect 3-4 hours of physical activity per day, interspersed with seeing the sights, meals, time in the van, and free time. Though I am used to trips with longer hikes and bike rides, I was not at all disappointed with the somewhat slower pace given all there was to see. If ALL you're looking for is an outdoor experience, this is not the trip for you, but if you want to experience another country while being active and without museum-hopping, you will be very happy.

I can think of no better way to have experienced Croatia for its beauty, culture and food. As part of the REI group, it never once felt commercial, but more as if we were exploring with local friends...getting to roam off the beaten path and see things the tour buses do not. Our group was a great mix of personalities, ages and backgrounds, and we got along immensely well. There was alot of laughter over many nights of rakija, wine and proscuitto, and great stories shared. I can genuinely say I was sad to say goodbye to the group at the end.

As many people have said here, the guides make the trip. Ours (Davor and Matko) were not only well prepared and on top of every detail, but had great senses of humor, jokes that I'm still laughing about, a love of road trip music, and interesting stories to share. When the ferry schedule changed on the sea kayaking day, they had back up speed boats ready before anyone was even aware of a glitch. You are in very good hands with this trip.

Perfect for travelers wishing to continue their Croatian adventure, this active extension showcases the natural beauty of Croatia's southern coast. Our exploration combines famous historical sites from Split to Dubrovnik, including the stone city of Mostar in Bosnia-Herzegovina, hiking on the Elafiti Islands and paddling on the clear waters of the Adriatic. Wrap it all up with a day exploring the labyrinth of alleyways in the fortressed city of Dubrovnik, a World Heritage site that arguably has the best-preserved city walls in the world.

                                        Day 1
After breakfast at our hotel, we depart Trogir and travel to Split for a tour of Diocletian's Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This massive palace was built by Emperor Diocletian at the turn of the fourth century AD for his retirement. It's a fascinating place to explore and one of the most famous architectural and cultural features on Croatia's Adriatic coast. We lunch in one of the old villages at the base of Biokovo Mountain, then cross the border from Croatia into Bosnia and Herzegovina. This evening we visit Mostar, the economic and cultural center of Herzegovina. Over five centuries old, Mostar is wedged dramatically between high mountains divided by the Neretva River. Without question the highlight of Mostar is the Old Bridge (Stari Most) which was originally built in 1566 by the Ottoman Empire. Destroyed during the war in 1993 but rebuilt in 2004 in its original form, the Old Bridge is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We spend the evening at a family owned hotel and restaurant situated on river Trebižat in the charming town of in Ljubuski. All meals included.

                                        Day 2
Wake to the sounds of one of the loveliest rivers in Bosnia and Herzegovina. We begin the day with a canoe trip on the narrow Trebižat River where we paddle surrounded by lush forests teeming with birds and the stunningly beautiful karst landscape formed by the river over thousands of years. In the afternoon we arrive in Dubrovnik for a guided tour of its fascinating Old Town. One of the world's most beautiful and iconic fortified cities, Dubrovnik is a medieval port consisting of bastions, fortresses, bell towers, drawbridges, cathedrals and an endless, interesting maze of terracotta-roofed houses and shops. Our guide will share the rich history of the city while opening up some its hidden back doors. We retire in the seaside village of Zaton, our home for the next three nights. Zaton is a picturesque village set on a deep bay that offers us access to the bustle of Dubrovnik, while providing a quiet and traditional setting from which to base our explorations. All meals included.

Canoeing: 1.5 hours; Walking tour: 1.5 hours.

                                        Day 3
Our destination today is southern Croatia's "undiscovered paradise"—the Elafiti Islands. Depending on the weather, water conditions and group make-up, we paddle our kayaks directly from our home base in Zaton or take a short ride on a local ferry to the smallest of the Elafiti Islands, Koločep. The island has fragrant cypress and pine forests creeping down rocky hillsides to beautiful sandy beaches and warm waters. We spend our day exploring the island coast on foot and in our kayaks. In the afternoon we return to Dubrovnik for independent exploration. Don't miss a walk on its city walls for superb views over the terracotta rooftops and the maze of alleyways. Relax in one of the Old Town's many sidewalk cafes and take-in the scene or visit crowd-free Lokrum Island, just 600 meters from Dubrovnik. Our guide will provide dining suggestions for dinner in Old Town. Breakfast and lunch included.

Kayaking: 2-6 hours (depending on the weather and water conditions).

                                        Day 4
We start the day with a one hour boat transfer to Lopud Island; at 1.8 square miles it is the second largest island in the Elafiti archipelago. Lopud is a peaceful, car-free oasis, with about 200 inhabitants involved in agriculture and fishing. We will explore the island on foot, hike to the fortress on the top of the hill for amazing views of nearby Mljet and Sipan islands and the open sea and walk by numerous churches and chapels. In the afternoon we ferry from Lopud to the mainland and return to Zaton this evening for a final dinner together. All meals included.

Hiking: 4 miles; Terrain: Easy, well-marked paths.

                                        Day 5
We provide one group transfer to Dubrovnik international airport for flights home today. Breakfast included (if flight departure time allows).
