Croatia Multisport

With its enchanting medieval cities, turquoise waters and rugged mountains, Croatia is the jewel of the Adriatic Sea. This small Mediterranean country is big on adventure! We start inland- hiking and biking in and around Croatia's premier national park, Plitvice, with its exquisite series of 16 travertine lakes and more than 90 waterfalls. Continuing south, we paddle through the narrow canyons of two of the most beautiful rivers in Europe, the Zrmanja and Krupa, splashing through easy rapids and quiet pools. Stretch your legs on hiking trails in the primeval forests of Krka National Park and on the mountain ridgelines of Paklenica. Then we head to Croatia's magnificent coast for a day of sea kayaking on car-free Vrgada Island before heading to Trogir to tour the cobblestone streets of this UNESCO World Heritage Site as a finale to an extraordinary adventure.

Or, continue your journey with our 5 day Dubrovnik and Beyond extension! Visit Diocletian's palace in Split, hike spectacular Biokovo Mountain, explore the beautiful old town of Mostar in Herzegovina, enjoy an active day trip to one of the lovely Elafiti Islands, and finish your adventure with a guided exploration of Dubrovnik's fortressed old town. With delicious Croatian fare and intimate lodgings throughout, it's easy to see why both Lonely Planet and National Geographic have called Croatia a "must do" destination.

Explore even more. See the Dubrovnik & Beyond trip extension for this trip.

Important Notice: Day 1 is the day you should plan to arrive at the meeting point for the trip. This may require departing your hometown one or more days in advance and traveling on an overnight flight.

Croatia Multisport Itinerary:

  • Day 1

Your trip begins today in Zagreb, Croatia. Arrive by late afternoon and transfer on your own to the hotel for the evening. Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, is a lively and colorful city and is reasonably manageable on foot. Our hotel is well located for exploring the city's main attractions. At 6:30pm we will meet in the hotel lobby for a welcome drink and brief orientation where we will have the chance to discuss the upcoming itinerary and get to know our guides and fellow travelers. Dinner on your own.

  • Day 2

Meet in the hotel lobby after breakfast and head out to Plitvice Lakes National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Croatia's premiere inland destination. The drive to the park is through lovely countryside with a stop for lunch in the picturesque riverside village of Rastoke. Once at Plitvice we have the afternoon to explore on foot. Plitvice Park is a spectacular karst landscape, a sequence of sixteen turquoise lakes linked together with cascading falls and travertine pools. The lakes are surrounded by beech and pine forests and are home to extensive wildlife. This evening we retire to the tiny village of Korana located in a picture-postcard riverside setting near Plitvice Park. Here we have the unique opportunity to spend two evenings with local residents who offer simple, clean and comfortable rooms in their homes. Tonight, weather permitting, our hosts prepare a riverside barbeque. All meals included.

Hiking: 4 miles; Terrain: easy, well marked paths.

  • Day 3

Today is all about exploring the lovely pastoral Croatian countryside by bicycle. We cycle roads that are nearly "traffic free" around Rakovica, a community founded in the Middle Ages and known historically for the 1871 uprising led by Eugen Kvaternik. While unsuccessful, it was the first attempt to win independence for the state of Croatia. Cycling through traditional villages, we come to Barac's Caves. After a picnic lunch we spend a couple of hours exploring the cave's fascinating karsts formations. According to the oral tradition of the local people, a man named Barać fought heroically and defeated a raging Turkish giant near these caves which were thereafter named in his honor. Relax this evening back in the peaceful Korana Village while enjoying a traditional supper. All meals included.

Biking: 4 hours; Terrain: rolling hills.

  • Day 4

After saying goodbye to our home hosts we continue south to the "Wild West" narrow canyons of the Zrmanja and Krupa Rivers. We visit a medieval monastery en route as well as enjoy a picnic lunch with local farmers. After a short instructional introduction to paddling (watercraft may be raft, canoe or sit-upon kayaks depending upon the river conditions), we push off for an afternoon of refreshing fun on the clear, warm and green waters of these Croatian rivers, considered two of the most beautiful in Europe. Waterfalls and easy rapids, hidden swimming pools, steep sided canyons and, very likely, no one else on the river but our group – it doesn't get better than this! We overnight in the ancient city of Zadar on the coast, which replaced its city walls with a promenade in 1874. All meals included.

Kayaking or rafting: Class I/II rapids.

  • Day 5

Roughly an hour's drive from Zadar is Paklenica National Park, part of a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve and a favorite hiking destination for the locals. Lying on the southeast slopes of the Velebit Mountains near the coast and cut by two awe-inspiring gorges, Mala Paklenica and Velika, Paklenica's scenery is one of the most pristine in the whole Mediterranean. The lofty peaks making up this range offer huge views of both coastal and mountain scenery. There are several wonderful hikes through beech and black pine forests to choose from depending upon weather and other factors. One possibility is the trail leading to Borisov Dom, a high mountain hut popular with alpinists. We return to Zadar for the evening. Breakfast and lunch included; dinner on your own.

    Hiking: 8 miles; elevation gain 1000'- 2000'.

  • Day 6

Croatia has more than 3,500 miles of stunning coastline dotted with 1,700 islands of all descriptions. Our morning begins with a short ride on a local wooden boat to the small island of Vrgada where we enjoy a day of kayaking. This lovely island has no cars, no hotels and has one of the finest sandy beaches you'll ever dig your toes into. Paddling comfortable sit-upon kayaks we explore the bays and the beaches while having ample time to swim in the clear azure waters, bask in the sun and savor a delicious beach picnic. This evening we transfer to the charming medieval, island town of Trogir, a UNESCO World Heritage site that dates back to the Greek colonists in the third century BC and is considered a remarkable example of continued of urban dwelling. The well-preserved town is a labyrinth of cobblestone streets with stone bridges, a 13th-century cathedral and 15th-century fortress built by the Venetians, a true step back in time. Breakfast and lunch included; dinner on your own.

    Kayaking: 4-6 hours.

  • Day 7

A full day of exploring takes us to Krka National Park with its fantastic karst formations and travertine waterfalls. By boat and by foot we explore the park's extensive waterways including visits to both the largest waterfall, Skradinski Buk, as well as the widest series of falls at Roski Slap. Be sure to bring your swimsuit as it may be tempting to swim in the warm emerald-green pools! Return to Trogir for our final evening dinner and a celebration of an amazing adventure. All meals included.

Hiking: 6- 8 miles; well marked paths.

  • Day 8

This morning we have an early rising and light breakfast before transferring to the international airport at Split for return flights home. Breakfast included.

Things to Consider

  • Please remember to always pack essential items such as your passport, money, eyewear, a change of clothing, hiking boots and medications in your carry-on baggage, in case your luggage is delayed.
  • Cotton is wonderful in warm weather. However, once it becomes wet from rain, water, or sweat, it will drain your body heat. Bring quick-drying synthetics such as Capilene, MTS and Thermax.
  • Always test your layers before a trip. Your outer layer should fit easily over the inside ones without binding and bunching up.
  • Make sure hiking boots are broken in. Bring moleskin for foot treatment. Thin liner socks worn under regular hiking socks may minimize the risk of blisters. The liner sock should be synthetic, not cotton. Test your sock combination before you go on the trip.
  • Stuff sacks are great for sorting gear. Use different sizes/colors to differentiate contents.
  • Laundry facilities are not readily available during this trip. We suggest hand washing quick-drying clothing items in your hotel room. Bringing a “travel clothes-line” might be useful.
  • When visiting some churches in Croatia, it is necessary to reasonably cover your arms and legs. Beachwear, tank tops, and short shorts are not appropriate attire when entering churches.
  • Required gear for paddling and cycling is provided.
  • If joining the Dubrovnik extension, there are no special or additional clothing needs

Perfect for travelers wishing to continue their Croatian adventure, this active extension showcases the natural beauty of Croatia's southern coast. Our exploration combines famous historical sites from Split to Dubrovnik, including the stone city of Mostar in Bosnia-Herzegovina, with a hike in the Dinaric Alps and paddling on the crystal clear waters of the Adriatic. Wrap it all up with a day exploring the labyrinth of alleyways in the fortressed city of Dubrovnik, a World Heritage site that arguably has the best-preserved city walls in the world.

Day 1
After breakfast we depart Trogir and travel to Split for a tour of Diocletian's Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This massive palace was built by Emperor Diocletian at the turn of the fourth century AD for his retirement. It's a fascinating place to explore and one of the most famous architectural and cultural features on Croatia's Adriatic coast. Next we head to Biokovo Mountain for a spectacular hike with views of the deep blue sea, the islands, and, on a very clear day, Italy is visible approximately 155 miles away. Biokovo is part of the Dinaric Alps system which stretches from Slovenia, through Croatia, and as far south as Albania. Together with the Velebit Mountains, this is the closest the chain gets to the sea. The view of the monumental rocky face of Biokovo with cliffs, scree slopes, towers, and gullies is impressive. We finish the day by crossing the border from Croatia into Bosnia and Herzegovina where we will stay the evening at a family owned hotel and restaurant situated on river Trebižat in the charming town of in Ljubuski. All meals included

Hiking: 3 hours, 1,500 feet elevation gain.

Day 2
Wake to the sounds of one of the loveliest rivers in Bosnia and Herzegovina. After breakfast we enjoy a canoe trip on narrow Trebižat River where we paddle surrounded by lush forests teeming with birds and the stunningly beautiful karst landscape formed by the river over thousands of years. In the afternoon we visit Mostar, the economic and cultural center of Herzegovina. Over five centuries old, Mostar is wedged dramatically between high mountains divided by the Neretva River. Without question the highlight of Mostar is the Old Bridge (Stari Most) which was originally built in 1566 by the Ottoman Empire. Destroyed during the war in 1993 but rebuilt in 2004 in its original form, the Old Bridge is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Leaving Mostar in the late afternoon, we continue our drive south to the seaside village of Zaton, just outside the city of Dubrovnik (7 miles), our home for the next three nights. Zaton is a picturesque village set in a deep bay that offers us access to the bustle of Dubrovnik while providing a quiet and traditional setting from which to base our explorations. All meals included.

Canoeing: 3 hours.

Day 3
This morning it's off to southern Croatia's "undiscovered paradise" – the Elafiti Islands. Depending on the weather, water conditions and group make-up, we paddle our kayaks directly from our home base in Zaton or take a short ride on a local ferry to the smallest of the Elafiti Islands, Kolocep. The island has fragrant cypress and pine forests creeping down rocky hillsides to beautiful sandy beaches and warm waters. We spend our day exploring the island coast by kayaking, short walks, and relaxed beach time. This evening we take a short hike up Mt. Srdj for a wonderful sunset over Dubrovnik and the Elafiti Islands before heading to Old Town for dinner and evening entertainment. All meals included.

Kayaking 4-6 hours; Hiking 30 minutes.

Day 4
Following breakfast this morning we head into Dubrovnik for a guided tour of its fascinating Old Town. Certainly one of the world's most beautiful and iconic fortified cities, Dubrovnik is a medieval port consisting of bastions, fortresses, bell towers, drawbridges, cathedrals and an endless, interesting maze of terracotta-roofed houses and shops. Your guide will share the rich history of the city while opening up some its hidden backdoors. You have time to explore more on your own as well as choose from Dubrovnik's many open-air cafes for lunch. Don't miss the walk along the city walls for the best views of the city! A visit to Lokrum Island, less than a mile from Dubrovnik, is also an option for today. The island is a nature reserve with trails, lovely swimming beaches, as well as an old abandoned fort built by the French in 1806 located on the summit of the island. Return to Zaton this evening for a final dinner together. Breakfast and dinner included.

Day 5
We provide one group transfer to Dubrovnik international airport for flights home today. Breakfast included (if flight departure time allows).

Note on Itinerary
Although we do our very best to adhere to the schedule above, this itinerary is subject to change for numerous reasons beyond our control including weather and terrain conditions.

Single Travelers
If you are traveling alone and specifically request single accommodations, you will be asked to pay the full single supplement noted above. If you wish to share accommodations, we will assign a roommate if one is available. If a roommate cannot be found, you will be asked to pay a reduced single fee, which is one-half of the full single supplement. Please be advised that there are a limited number of single rooms available.

Included
Trip price includes: 5 nights accommodation; meals as noted in the daily itinerary; private transportation throughout; bi-lingual guide; canoe and sea kayak gear; guided tour / entrance fee old town Dubrovnik; island ferry; airport transfer if departing with group.

Not Included
1 Lunch; alcoholic beverages; additional optional transfers; optional evening entertainment in Dubrovnik; items of a personal nature and optional gratuities to your guides.

Qualifications
This trip is rated Moderate [3] and will be enjoyed by anyone who is physically fit and enjoys active days. Although the hiking is not particularly long or strenuous, prior hiking experience is recommended. The hiking distance is around 5 miles over uneven terrain on Biokovo Mountain with approximately 1,500 feet of elevation gain. Canoeing on Day 2 (Trebižat River) is typically an easy paddle requiring no prior experience. However, you should be comfortable in water and able to swim. This is also true of the sea kayaking on Day 3 when you will be paddling in fairly protected waters along the island coastline. Two days have van transfers of 2+ hours.
