Thailand Multisport
The golden temples, colorful cultures and renowned cuisine of Thailand are a perfect complement to your appetite for outdoor adventure on this action-packed multisport adventure with REI. From the celebrated cultural and adventure hub of the north, Chiang Mai, we head into the thick Thai jungle and learn to soar like native gibbons through the treetops (with a little help from some high zip-line cables). Next, we're introduced to the diverse indigenous peoples of the north on a life-altering three-day trek through the forests and hills, stopping along the way to be welcomed into the homes of the hill-tribe people to dine, rest, and experience first-hand the everyday challenges and joys of life among the hill-tribe villagers. Following on in our journey, we'll trade our boots for bikes and pedal through the Thai countryside past terraced rice paddies, farms and forests to Sri Lanna National Park, where a short paddle delivers us to a floating restaurant for one of many fine tastes of Thai cuisine. Our way ultimately leads back to Chiang Mai and its famous night market, where our journey ends in celebration. But for those craving a taste of more fun in the sun, join us for an extended exploration of Thailand's stunning southern peninsula as we fly to Phuket, where the sandy beaches, isolated islands, craggy cliffs and aquatic caves of the Andaman Sea present the ideal setting for more paddling adventure. On our southern kayaking extension we'll experience a completely different side of Thailand than the north offers. We will kayak by giant karst limestone towers and paddle through breathtaking caves hidden beneath the jagged cliffs. Then we head to an island resort nestled in the midst of the dramatic surroundings. Explore one or both of Thailand's famous faces with REI on our Thailand Multisport Adventure and Southern Kayaking Extension.

This trip is rated Moderate Plus [3-4] and will be enjoyed by anyone who is physically fit and enjoys hiking and biking. Most days will be moderate, but our hiking days can be strenuous over uneven terrain on trails that are not maintained and can be muddy, slippery and rugged. A walking stick or trekking poles are highly recommended. We hike in areas that are remote and have few "western" amenities or facilities. In addition, there are up to three days of mountain biking (2-4 hours) on hard-packed trails (little traffic) and rough country roads. You should be familiar with riding a mountain bike, braking and shifting between gears. No experience is needed for the short kayaking portion of this trip – this paddle is appropriate for novices.
Thailand has a tropical climate. Temperatures in the 80s–90s can be expected during the day with cooler temperatures (50s-60s) at night depending on the season. Temperatures in the northern mountains will typically be 10-20º cooler, especially during the evenings (in the winter months, temperatures can dip in to the low 40s at night). During the summer months, expect evening rain (possibly daytime as well) and hot/humid conditions.

Things to Consider
- Please remember to always pack essential items such as your passport, money, eyewear, hiking boots, a pair of shorts/shirt/sandals, camera, and medications in your carry-on baggage in case your luggage is delayed
- Bring clothing that is light in weight and color, which ventilates and protects you from the sun. It is always good to have a lightweight, long-sleeved fleece or synthetic top, especially for the cooler evenings in the northern hill country in the winter months.
- We spend three (3) nights in rustic, remote accommodations with few amenities. All guests share one or two rooms (longhouse) upon a shared sleeping platform; bathrooms are basic outhouses and there is no electricity. While sleeping bags are provided, you will find it useful to have your own sleeping sheet. In addition, in the winter months, evenings can be very cool (sometimes “cold”) – bring sleepwear accordingly.
- Always test your layers before a trip. Your outer layer should fit easily over the inside ones without binding and bunching up.
- Make sure boots are broken-in. Bring moleskin for foot treatment. Thin liner socks worn under regular hiking socks may minimize the risk of blisters. The liner sock should be synthetic, not cotton.
- Stuff sacks are great for sorting gear. Use different sizes/colors to differentiate contents.
- A pack rain cover or large garbage bags provide good protection for your daypack, should it rain (all a possibility especially during the summer months)
- If you wear prescription glasses, use a safety cord and bring an extra pair if possible. Contact lens users should also bring an extra set, or bring eyeglasses for a backup.
- Space for luggage is limited. Pack lightly, fitting all clothing and sleeping bag into one duffel bag. During the day, plan on carrying a daypack with an extra pair of shorts, sunscreen, towel or wrap, water bottle/hydration system and camera.

Comments about REI Adventures Thailand Multisport:
Trail snacks were mostly provided by Pan our guide. I could have lightened my load had I know that. Nothing better than hiking in the jungle for several hours and having a cool fresh towel waiting for you at the end of the day. The rustic longhouses exceeded my expectations, they rustic don't gt me wrong, but offered more than I thought.

Comments about REI Adventures Thailand Multisport:
I was part of the holiday 2011 Thailand Multisport group and loved it. I learned so much about the people of northern Thailand, and there was plenty of time to explore. Most importantly the trip was highly organized, and I never had to worry about logistics. The lead guide, Pan, was fantastic, he took care of all of the details but was never in the way, and very flexible if our group wanted to do any spontaneous excursions. Highly recommended trip!

The thai food prepared by the guides was outstanding! The sleeping pads supplied at the Longhouses were a bit thin. Bring a flashlight or headlamp for one of the longhouses and the cave.
