Kilimanjaro Climb and Safari Extension

Kilimanjaro has tempted climbers for centuries. To climb to its summit and watch the sunrise spread its golden light across the savannah below is an experience second to none … it's simply breathtaking! This huge, snow-capped mountain rises dramatically above the vast African plains; it stands majestically as one of the 'seven summits' of the world at 19,340'. Ours is a challenging and rewarding 6-day trek up the lovely Marangu route, a non-technical climb. Our team of top African guides, with their delightful personalities and gentle encouragement along with their in-depth knowledge of mountaineering, ensure that you have strong odds of summiting. An extra day is built in for acclimatization. All who climb Kilimanjaro feel a deep sense of accomplishment … deservedly so. Join us on the "roof of Africa!"

Continue the adventure at a more relaxed pace on our safari extension with 5 days of wildlife viewing. First we venture into the Ngorongoro Crater, home to a fantastic spectacle of big game including elephants, lions and rhinos. Then it's onto the world's most famous wildlife reserve, Serengeti National Park, where we sleep, true safari style, in walled tents. Last, we visit Lake Manyara National Park, a serene place where a vast alkaline soda lake, home to flocks of pink flamingos, meets the dramatic rise of the Great Rift escarpment. Be on the look out for its tree climbing lions! As we end this wonderfully varied trip, odds are you'll think: "Just how soon can I come back again!"

Explore even more. See the Kilimanjaro Safari trip extension.

Important Notice: Day 1 is the day you should plan to arrive at the meeting point for the trip. This may require departing your hometown one or more days in advance and traveling on an overnight flight.

Kilimanjaro Climb Itinerary:

  • Day 1

Your trip begins today in Arusha, Tanzania with a flight into Kilimanjaro Airport. We provide a group transfer to a very comfortable hotel near Arusha. Most travelers find they are tired after the long flight and prefer to go directly to their room to rest. No meals included.

  • Day 2

Take your time today to adjust to life in Africa. You're free to do as you wish until our 4 p.m. group orientation meeting. You can arrange local transportation at the hotel front desk if you'd like to explore Arusha town, which is known as the "little Geneva of Tanzania." Set in the shadow of Mount Meru with impressive views of Kilimanjaro, Arusha was established in 1900 as a German garrison town. Or you might want to just relax at the pool and gardens or try the jogging path on the grounds. We can also arrange for a day trip into Arusha National Park for some wildlife viewing (added cost). Breakfast and dinner included.

  • Day 3

We depart after breakfast and drive to the park headquarters. There is the normal hustle and bustle of hiring porters, signing in and beginning the climb. The actual hike begins at the park gate (6,000') and we hike 5.5 miles up to Mandara hut (8,860') near the upper edge of the forest line. The hike takes about 4 - 6 hours- a good time to start using your walking sticks. Our path starts off in a bamboo rainforest (keep your eyes open for blue monkeys) then opens up to hillsides of heather and temperate forests. If time and weather permit, a short walk from Mandara to Maundi Crater is certainly worth it. Lodging here, as well as at Horombo, is in wooden A-frame huts that sleep 4 to 8 people. All meals included starting with breakfast today through breakfast on Day 9.

Hiking: 5.5 miles; Elevation gain: ~2,860'.

  • Day 4

Our destination today is Horombo Hut at 12,340'. It takes a good 5-6 hours to cover the 10-mile journey – altitude will slow the group down, and the trail is strenuous but not technical. Be sure you're drinking lots of water (no less than 2 liters per day). We often get our first views of the Kibo summit today far in the distance as we pass from forest into high moorland. In addition, we pass beneath the impressive, rocky southern face of Mawenzi - one of the three volcanic peaks that make up the summit of Kilimanjaro.

  • Day 5

Today is an extra day to acclimatize, and it is best spent taking the day hike up towards Mawenzi, gaining elevation so that this evening when you return to Horombo, you're sleeping at a lower elevation. The day hike is through a beautiful landscape with unique flora such as the odd-shaped, seemingly inside-out giant groundsel. The trail offers inspirational views of both Kibo and Mawenzi. Birdlife is also abundant in the Horombo area. If you're feeling really fatigued at this point, you can choose to spend the day at Horombo. Afternoon rains are common, so plan your day hike in order to be back inside the lodge with a cup of tea and good book by 4 p.m. And, after the rain passes, the sunsets are typically beautiful and the black night sky full of stars.

    Hiking: 6 miles.

  • Day 6

Today is another long hike, this time up to Kibo Hut at almost 15,520'. Although shorter in distance, this usually takes 7 hours because it is steeper, and the altitude slows everyone down. Keep drinking your water! The route passes directly up onto the Saddle, a wide, flat plateau with the peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi looming overhead. The views here are fantastic! The last part of the trail passes across the plateau before a final ascent to Kibo Hut, a stone hut with rooms that sleep 10 - 15 people in bunk beds. We have a light dinner, a pre-climb talk with our guides and turn in early for what little sleep is possible.

  • Day 7

Our guides wake us before midnight for tea and cookies and final dressing (in many layers) for our summit attempt. It can be bitterly cold. The guides like to have the team on the trail between 12:00-1:00 a.m. in hope of reaching the summit for the sunrise. Starting off, the trail swings back and forth up a steep scree slope while the line of climbers stretches out in the darkness, only visible by their headlamps. Placing one foot in front of the other and focusing on your breathing, the black sky infinitely above you, this climb is one you will never forget. Most climbers arrive at Gillman's point, elevation 18,685 feet, in time to see the sunrise around 6:30 a.m. The views from the top looking down on the plains of Africa make it all worthwhile. Some climbers decide they have reached their goal and head down from here, a legitimate summit. Others hike an additional 2-3 hours to the true summit, Uhuru Peak at 19,340'. The descent from Gillman's point is fairly rapid, taking about 2 hours. Most climbers take a short rest at Kibo Hut before descending to Horombo Hut for the night, arriving in the late afternoon.

Hiking: 15 miles, 12-16 hours; Elevation gain: ~3,165'-3,820'; Elevation loss: ~7,000'.

  • Day 8

Another long hike is in store for us today, but it is essentially all downhill, and our spirits are boosted by the satisfaction of yesterday's climb. Back at Marangu gate, at the park headquarters, we pick up our certificates to attest to our success and bid farewell to many of our porters and guides. We transfer then to our hotel in Arusha (2 – 2 ½ hours), where it's a welcome treat to take a hot shower, drink a tall cold one and commemorate the climb with a celebration dinner.

Hiking: 14 miles; Elevation loss: ~6,340'.

  • Day 9

Today is personal time for shopping in Arusha or relaxing at the lodge. A day room is arranged for late check-out. We provide a group transfer to the airport. Or, continue the adventure on our Kilimanjaro Safari Extension. No trip to Africa is complete without seeing its magnificent wildlife! Breakfast included; lunch and dinner on your own.

Not Included

Airfare to Arusha, 2 lunches, 1 dinner, optional gratuities to your guides and climbing support staff, excess baggage charges, airport taxes and items of a personal nature such as soft drinks, bottled water or liquor, laundry fees, phone calls, internet access, cost of obtaining a passport and visas, immunizations or insurance.

Qualifications

This trip is rated Strenuous [5]. Trip members should be strong, experienced hikers in excellent physical condition. Your physical fitness is vital to your success on the climb. A serious physical conditioning program should be undertaken 6-9 months in advance to get into shape. Hiking hills for the legs, swimming to increase lung capacity and circulation, jogging and bicycling for overall fitness are all excellent for building the strength necessary for the trek. The best training is extensive hiking up and down hills with significant elevation gain and loss (2,500'-3,800' – similar to what you'll experience on the climb) and doing 10 mile hikes on weekends prior to the trip. Previous experience at altitude may improve your chances of summiting Kilimanjaro. Consult with your physician.

High Altitude

The summit of Kilimanjaro is at 19,340', and even with a rest day the climb has a rapid rate of ascent. We attempt to minimize the effect of altitude through our program of acclimatization. Most climbers experience some symptoms of altitude illness during the climb. These symptoms can include headache, nausea, loss of appetite, difficulty breathing and general weakness. More severe reactions can include both cerebral and pulmonary edema, which can result in permanent injury or death. The only cure is to descend. Our Kilimanjaro climbing guides are experienced at altitude and are there to help all trip members maximize their summit climb.

Weather

The weather on Kilimanjaro is quite diverse. The climb starts through a wide belt of wet tropical forest (70s-80s), and then goes through zones with generally decreasing temperatures and rainfall to the summit where there is permanent ice and below-freezing temperatures. Our trips avoid the rainy season, which runs March to May, and the short rains in November.

The summit climb is done at night and the temperature, regardless of season, is always cold and can be below freezing. Safari Extension: Temperatures are typically in the 70s - 80s during the day, falling to the 50s in the evening.

Things to Consider

  • Always pack essential items such as your passport, money, eyewear, a change of clothing, hiking boots and medications in your carry-on baggage in case your luggage is delayed.
  • The duffel bag used for the climb will be placed inside a waterproof duffel bag (provided by REI Adventures). While on the climb, your main luggage will be placed in storage at the Arusha lodge.
  • Your guide and climbing team will ensure that plenty of potable drinking water is available during your climb. Hydration packs with a minimum 70oz capacity are recommended for the lower elevations. Since even insulated hydration packs can freeze on our summit day, be sure to pack along two additional 1-quart water bottles for your summit attempt.
  • Be kind to your feet! If you plan on purchasing new boots, do so well ahead of time and allow yourself time to break them in. A very good way to minimize the risk of blisters is to wear a thin liner sock under your regular hiking socks. Test your sock combination before you go on the trip.
  • Many of the roads in Africa are deeply rutted and dusty. It is a good idea to pack camera equipment and binoculars in sturdy plastic bags to protect them from the dust. This is in addition to their normal cases. Also, bring lens cleaning materials.
  • Cotton is wonderful in warm weather and can be worn on safari. However, once it becomes wet, it will drain your body heat. Bring wool or wicking synthetics such as Capilene, MTS and Thermax for the climb portion of this trip.
  • Laundry is difficult on this trip, but you can hand wash a few quick-drying items and the lodges.
  • The REI MultiTowel or similar is recommended as a quick-dry towel on this trip. See www.rei.com for details.

Feel free to give us a call at (800) 622-2236 should you have any questions regarding the gear list. The staff at our stores and Direct Sales (800-426-4840) will also be happy to help you with gear questions. Or check out www.rei.com/learn. Comments about REI Adventures Kilimanjaro Climb and Safari Extension:

We did this adventure as a family (two teenagers 17 years and 19 years). REI made the logistics incredibly easy and the experience going up the mountain as well as descending were very well described, planned and executed. Peter made it enjoyable every step with his "happy" stories. The support staff worked so hard with our meals and comforts. We enjoyed the hikes each day and appreciated the easy pace to help everyone acclimate. An experience of a life time ...

          • What was the highlight of your trip?:
          • The whole experience was amazing ... the hikes up, the porters, the guide (Peter Mato and his assistant, Noah) and the views - incredible.
          • What would be your advice to potential travelers?:
          • Do make sure you pack everything on the list they provide ... the Adventure Specialist the are assigned to assist you in preparing are most helpful and they have all climbed Mt. Kilimenjaro so they "know."

Comments about REI Adventures Kilimanjaro Climb and Safari Extension:

In hindsight we would have spent a few more days in Tanzania to recover. My wife wound up with a blood clot after we returned home. The doctors said this was a product of sitting on a plane for 24 hours after such extreme exertion, combined with the fact that she was on birth control. Even though she walked around on the plane, this was not enough to prevent the clot. Ladies, you may want to talk to your doctor about how to prevent clots while on birth control.
The food far exceeded our expectations. It was delicious and plentiful. Accommodations were nice as well, though the bathroom facilities were...adventurous (if you've ever seen the movie Trainspotting you'll be well-prepared.)

Comments about REI Adventures Kilimanjaro Climb and Safari Extension:

The food was MUCH better than I expected. The equipment supplied by REI was great. This was really a 5-star climb and the guides made everything as easy as possible. I thought the packing list was comprehensive - though you certainly don't need a poncho AND rainproof jacket/pants. One or the other will do.

                  • Why did you choose this trip?:
                  • I wanted to climb Kili, but didn't want the hassle of trying to plan the entire trip myself. I wanted to focus on the climb and let someone else worry about the details.
                  • What was the highlight of your trip?:
                  • Of course summitting was stellar, but overall it was the quality of the guides and the other people in the climbing group. It was great to be with like-minded adventurers who were physically and mentally prepared.
                  • What would be your advice to potential travelers?:
                  • Get as much experience with altitude as possible so that you can become familiar with how it will affect you. Go over 14,000 feet if you can. If not, just hike, hike, hike.

                      • Why did you choose this trip?:
                      • After decades of hiking, it was time to do this. I had time to do only the climb up Kilimanjaro, in 2005.
                      • What was the highlight of your trip?:
                      • Uhuru Peak - 19,340 ft elevation
                      • What would be your advice to potential travelers?:
                      • There are five things about the climb that you should know/do:
                        1) Go soon. Within your lifetime the glaciers on Kilimanjaro will be gone.
                        2) Peter is the best of guides. He's a Chagga tribesman raised on the slopes of Kili who's summitted hundreds of times. He'll be watching out for you physically, mentally, and spiritually, the entire trip – literally from arrival and departure from the airport. You'll want his indefatigable good humor on your trek. He giggles irrepressibly while repeating belabored corny stories and jokes he has heard, and can't help himself from laughing long before the punch-lines, which you can see coming from miles away. If you don't come to love Peter, there's something wrong with you.
                        3) You must train and prepare seriously, but there are no guarantees. The climb is non-technical – it's a marathon rather than a sprint. On summit day you need stamina as much as strength – hour after hour of relentless plodding steps upward, innumerable switchbacks, breathing in sync with your steps – can you handle that, mentally too? (As part of my training I summitted Long's Peak (14,259 ft), and had I lived in Estes Park I would have done that several times.) At Horombo Hut (12,200 ft) midway up, do the dayhike to acclimate. Before you go, ask your physician about Diamox to help with altitude sickness. But accept your fate on the mountain – altitude sickness or weather might scrub your summit day. Young hikers who trained well might turn back, older or ill-prepared ones may get there, regardless.
                        4) On summit day: at Gilman's Point, look for the curvature of the earth at the horizon. Take a few minutes to watch the sun rise over the African plains. You are blessed to be there as a witness.
                        5) Donate your gear – a lot of it – to your porters. Sure, you'll keep a little memento of summit day (Peter will give you one to carry to Uhuru Peak). But your heirs and the Smithsonian are not going to want your summit day boots, fleece, jacket, pack, gloves, hat, etc, etc, to memorialize your trek. The porters – who outnumber trekkers about 3 to 1 – who carried all your heavy overnight gear up to 15,500 feet (Kibo Huts) very much need what you can donate. For the gear lottery at trail's end, the porters snatched up my Goretex rain jacket, down jacket, headlamp, thermals, woolen socks, and more, before going for the cheaper, mundane items like water bottles. Your porters wished they could have been as warm, dry, and comfortable as you were. Tanzania has an average per capita annual income of $440 USD (2008); yup, $440. So, you can afford to give away a lot of what those porters cannot afford to buy, much less find in non-existent gear stores (regardless how well you tip them afterwards). Celebrate your summit and reward your generosity to the Tanzanians by purchasing back home all the newest gear you've been eyeing with envy, anyway. (Novelty items are popular with the crews too – like major league caps & jerseys, CD's by pop artists, etc). While you're at it, bring school supplies to give to the Maasai schoolchildren if you do the safari afterwards in the Ngorongoro Crater (or give them to Peter to give to those kids if you depart straight home from the mountain). So give that gear to those who'll remember you for it.

Comments about REI Adventures Kilimanjaro Climb and Safari Extension:

We were lucky and had great weather on Kili. In conditions like we had the hike is just a long steep walk. However, my wife and I did not just want to endure the climb, we wanted to enjoy it. We were able to accomplish that by doing months of weekend training hikes in Colorado's Pike Peak region, frequently getting as high as 12,000-14,000 ft. We were some of the oldest members of our group, but probably had the best summit experience due to our conditioning routine.

Our success on Kili was also due in large part to the competence of our head guide, his assistants and the porters. The mountain camps were comfortable and food was outstanding. I have never felt better at high altitude than on this trip probably because I was better fed and hydrated than on self-supported hikes and climbs.

The safari was fantastic. I am a photographer and was not the slightest bit disappointed with my photo-ops shooting from the safari trucks. Our safari guides were also extremely friendly and knowledgeable about the animals and their habitat. The camping experience while on safari felt right out of a John Ford movie - terrific!

                          • Even though by mountaineering standards the Marangu Route on Kilimanjaro is not serious, do not underestimate the physical demands of the 50 mile round trip that gains some 13,000 ft. Get in good hiking condition and train at as high an elevation as you can.

The trip was very well done and very well planned --especially the logistics involved with moving our group up the mountain. The safari was well led with personable and knowledgeable drivers/guides.

The pre-trip support from REI was excellent with questions about gear and booking of airfare efficiently and promptly handled.

The only upset with the whole experience involved the recommendations around cash to bring with us and tipping. The REI site recommended $600. That barely covered the tipping and incidental expense much less bringing anything back. All those that brought the recommended amount of cast ended up having to find a ATM - which is not always simple in Tanzania. And the amounts that REI recommended for tipping were not in line with what guides/porters/drivers were expecting which led to uncomfortable situations. Very disappointing -- especially since REI's other pre-trip information was excellent.

The tipping situation is why this trip got a four and not 5 stars.

                                • Definitely train for the trip and train in the gear you will wear on the climb. Bring the following: Plenty of warm clothes and rain gear, the newest US currency you can get from the bank, a good attitude, an open mind and suggested meds. Also, carry-on a bag with some of your hiking gear in case your luggage is lost. Think about bringing gear you are ok to give away at the end. The porters would greatly appreciate it!

All three of us did summit and we all thoroughly enjoyed our trip. The only shortcoming was related to accommodations, especially in Arusha. There were problems related to water availability. Same thing at Lake Manyara. In the end this was a minor inconvenience and solutions were provided.

                                          • What was the highlight of your trip?:
                                          • The people. We had a great group of women going up the mountain the supporting staff, whether drivers, guides, porters, cooks, etc. were beyond amazing. And the food...gosh the food! Gourmet eating on the mountain and on safari.
                                          • What would be your advice to potential travelers?:
                                          • Just train as advised and bring everything in those lists. I did not regret anything I ended up bringing.

Perfect for travelers wishing to continue their Tanzanian adventure, this safari showcases the natural beauty & magnificent animals of Tanzania's great wildlife parks. Be on the lookout for its tree climbing lions! As we end this wonderfully varied trip, odds are you'll think: "just how soon can I come back again!"

Important Notice: Day 1 is the day you should plan to arrive at the meeting point for the trip. This may require departing your hometown one or more days in advance and traveling on an overnight flight.

                                          Day 1
After breakfast and saying a final good-bye to departing climbers, we set out on our wildlife safari, an equally rich experience that requires much less physical effort! We leave Arusha around 9:30am and drive to the Ngorongoro Crater, one of the natural wonders of the world. Our route takes us up along the crater rim, which stands at 7,600'. We can often spot wildlife before we arrive at our camp on the ridge. The tents are large, roomy and have cots. Just put your sleeping bag on top. All meals provided through lunch on Day 6.

                                          Driving time: 5 hours.

                                          Day 2
After an early breakfast we depart at 8 a.m. so we can spend a half day exploring the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater, 2,000' below the rim. The roads in and out of the crater are steep and require 4-wheel drive. Some regard the Crater as the original Garden of Eden; the Maasai consider it "the footprint of God." It is the largest intact crater in the world. The high ground around the rim lies under a thick canopy of lichen-covered tropical forest, often shrouded in mist, while the floor of the crater teems with all kinds of wildlife. At the heart of the crater's 10-mile wide grassland plain there lies a soda lake that attracts vast numbers of flamingo and other water birds. Visitors to Ngorongoro are almost sure to see rhino, elephant, buffalo, lion, cheetah, zebra and many species of antelope! This was once the home of the Maasai and they are still allowed to take their herds of cattle into the crater at certain times of the year for grazing and watering. All too soon it's time to leave and drive to the Serengeti where we camp for two nights in the bush. Our camp is situated deep in the very heart of the Serengeti, close to the Seronera River. The riverine forest consists of yellow-barked acacias. It's an ideal biosphere for leopards, which are seen quite often here along with lions, hippos and, occasionally, elephants. This area is the principal source of shade for the wildlife wandering the short grass plains, which makes game viewing here excellent. For obvious reasons, it is not safe to stray far from camp.

Driving time: 3 hours to the Serengeti plus time for game drives.

                                          Day 3
Today is a full day in the Serengeti. We explore the most famous wildlife park in the world, unsurpassed in the number of mammals. The Maasai called this region the "Siringitu" meaning "the place where the land moves on forever." This is most certainly a reference to the constant movement of the huge numbers of animals that live in the vast savannahs of the Serengeti. This is one of the largest and last remaining wildlife sanctuaries in the world. Discovering areas with abundant wildlife, we witness the drama of predator versus prey played out in front of us. Have your cameras and binoculars ready, but take time to soak up the smells, sounds and sights with all your senses unencumbered. We spend our second night at Seronera camp, trading stories around the campfire while listening to the sounds of the bush.

Game drives approximately 2-3 hours each.

                                          Day 4
After breakfast we bid our camp staff farewell before heading to Lake Manyara National Park, stopping at the Olduvai Gorge overlook, the famous archeological site where, in 1959, Dr Louis Leakey and his wife, Mary, found humanoid remains of one of the earliest forms of man. We plan to arrive in time for a late lunch at our night's lodging complete with a lovely view of the Rift valley and a swimming pool that's perfect for cooling off. Spend the afternoon relaxing by the pool, enjoying a cool drink on the veranda, and taking some time to truly savor the moment. Dinner and overnight is on the outskirts of Lake Manyara.

                                          Driving time: 6 hours.

                                          Day 5
After breakfast we head down the dramatic Great Rift escarpment, taking in the superb vistas along the way, to Lake Manyara National Park. Here we spend the morning enjoying the diverse wildlife of this small, verdant park. Unlike the Serengeti, Manyara has a bit of a tropical feel to it and supports a huge birdlife as well as larger animals such as giraffe, buffalo, elephant and the famed tree-climbing lions. We will stop at a nearby lodge for a delicious lunch before departing for Mto Wa Mbu village (literally "mosquito village"). This small village on the outskirts of Manyara has a truly wonderful crafts market showcasing the artistic wares of many of Tanzania's 120 tribes. Bargain hard – have fun! Then it is back to our lodge for an afternoon of leisure at the pool. It's a nice chance to say our goodbye to Africa and reflect upon what this amazingly layered trip has meant to each of us. All meals included.

                                          Day 6
After breakfast we depart for Arusha, arriving in time for an early lunch. For those departing from the Kilimanjaro airport, we provide a day room and one group transfer to the airport. Dinner on your own.

                                          Driving time: 3 hours.
