Operating income was $136.6 million, up from $133.2 million in 2011. Net income for the year was $29.0 million, down from $30.2 million in 2011.

The Board of Directors of Recreational Equipment, Inc. (REI) has named Brian Unmacht the co-op’s Interim CEO.
REI’s sitting CEO, Sally Jewell, has been engaged in the confirmation process to become Secretary of the U.S. Department of the Interior and a member of President Obama’s Cabinet. The REI board decided that an Interim CEO provides definitive executive accountability during Jewell’s absence through the confirmation process and also establishes interim leadership if she is confirmed by the U.S. Senate. If Jewell is confirmed, the REI board will conduct a national search for the next CEO.

As the country’s largest consumer cooperative with a significant membership base, REI welcomed nearly 842,000 new members in 2011, up 7 percent from 2010.

Operating income for the year was a record $115.4 million, an increase of 15 percent over $100.6 million in 2009. Net income in 2010 was $30.2 million, up 1.4 percent from $29.8 million in the previous year. The company’s direct sales channel, which includes online and catalog sales, grew by 22.9 percent. Comp store sales grew by 8.1 percent, up from negative 3.5 percent in 2009.

REI (Recreational Equipment, Inc.),a national retailer of quality outdoor gear and apparel, today announced 2009 sales of $1.46 billion, up slightly from $1.43 billion the previous year. Operating income in 2009 was $100.6 million, an increase of 37 percent over $73.6 million in 2008. Net income in 2009 was $29.8 million, up 106 percent from $14.5 million in the previous year. The company’s direct sales channel, which includes online and catalog sales, grew by nearly 5 percent, while comp store sales declined by 3.5 percent, outperforming an expected 5 percent decline.
