REI x Subaru TerraCycle Recycling Program - divert your snack wrappers from landfills!

Did you know, thanks to our friends at Subaru, you can now recycle snack wrappers at all REI stores via TerraCycle Zero Waste Boxes?

That's right! Although temporarily paused in 2020, you can again recycle snack wrappers at an REI store near you, thanks to a partnership with Subaru!

How does it work? Just bring your clean, candy and cookie wrappers, and individual, multipack and family-size snack bags to your closest REI store and drop them in the Terracycle bin. Terracycle then takes this 'hard-to-recycle' waste and converts the snack wrappers to useful, high-quality recycled products like picnic tables, benches and playground materials. To date, REI locations have gathered over 3,700 pounds of waste!

Please join us in this effort! Share your ideas, your pictures, your successes and your challenges as you add this habit to your day-to-day life.

Are you sure they accept foil lined bags?  These are very difficult to recycle...

@kjknows @Luv2Kayak @smarisblum unfortunately, the Terracycle program does not currently accept the freeze-dried backpacking food packaging, like the Mountain House and Backpacker's Pantry bags. We have sent along the feedback that y'all would appreciate the opportunity to recycle these, if possible in the future.

Recycle - REDUCE - Re-use

Too many people forget:

Reconsider - Refuse

Recycling is a hypnotic suggestion put upon us by the packaging industry. The burden should not be on the end user. All of the psychology of recycling is to blame the end user.

Very little of what is currently put into the recycling waste stream is actually recycled into a usable product needed by many in our society. There are only so many park benches made of recycled plastic that the world needs.

Almost no plastic is recycled, and any plastic that is recycled from packaging must be in some very limited product. All of the energy going into gathering the recycled materials does not make up for the end use benefit of making an end use product of recycled plastic that can never be recycled again.

I know this discussion will sound harsh. It's difficult to break off the hypnotic spell.

Regain your power by choosing not to have your items in such packaging. You don't have to make purchases of snack items in individual wrappings. It's possible to make your own.

In other words, choose your strategies carefully to be effective in this world. If you want to live according to your values, look closely at your behaviors. You don't need to take the well trodden path, walk your own path.

What is the status of the program for Spring 2021? When I last checked with my local REI, the store manager in Issaquah seemed annoyed and told me that the boxes are too expensive. 🤔

Thanks for reaching out!

At this time the TerraCycle candy wrapper recycling program should be active in all REI stores. We checked in with the Issaquah store team and they confirmed their box is up front.

Hopefully this helps, thanks!

Hi REI-JohnJ,

Just stopped in to Seattle Flagship today and was told the program (TerraCycle mylar wrapper recycling) is not currently in effect.  The partner checked with his manager who told him it was not yet reinstated.   FYI

We apologize for any confusion around this. We will follow up with our teams who are working with this partnership. Thank you for the head's up!

That may or may not be helpful. If you drive to the collection site, you may do more environmental damage than what you prevent. Think before you act!

I bike.  Much easier parking, too! 😉

Do they accept both metallicized and non-metallicized wrappers?

I've checked Terracycle's site, and looked through this thread, but I still haven't found the answer.
