The softness does fade a bit after awhile, likely due to washing and drying, but I think that's probably normal. I wear size 10.5 shoes, and Medium was the size for me. They keep feet reasonably warm but are never too hot for me, though I haven't tested them in any extreme temperatures. Highly recommend.
