Apr 10, 2015Not as good as previous years' models
Read More This is my third year buying the Sahara bucket hat in Infant/Toddler Boy sizes. In the two years before that, I've acquired this hat in every size up to 24m/2T, and even got multiples of each size just in case something got lost. Yes, the hats were that good! So, seeing that they came back in stock for summer 2015 I rushed to get some for my son. I'm sad to say that the 2015 version of the Sahara bucket hat is just not as good as 2013 or 2014, in my opinion... Not so good things: * The material feels thicker, it's especially evident on the brim (which also feels like it's more narrow, but it could just be the different proportions of the 2T-4T size). * The shape of the bucket portion of the hat also seems to be a little different. It doesn't fit my sons head like the 2013 and 2014 hats did. Every single one of those fit his head very well, the chin strap didn't even have to be buckled for them to stay on securely. My boy's head has certainly grown, but it remains the same basic shape which makes me feel like it's something about the hat that's changed. It feels more shallow, I think, and doesn't quite hug the top of the head like the earlier models. Keeps sliding off and turning. I've tried a size up and a size down just in case, and the same problem is there. * The position of the chin strap is different and not in a good way. It's been shifted forward quite a bit rather than being more or less in the center. When the hat is worn, the strap is basically sitting on the side of my son's cheeks rather than being more under the chin. It actually works better to turn the hat around so it's backwards, then the strap sits under the chin (albeit a bit too far back, I think). But the fit of the hat is even worse then... Good things: * The buckle on the chin strap is still awesome, love the breakaway feature. * The hat is still better than many available out there * Looks cute * You can stuff the hat into a pocket and have it come out looking just fine * The quality of the construction and materials is good. All of our previous Sahara hats were indestructible. * There's always hope that the 2016 model will be better... Overall, I think that the 2015 iteration of the Sahara bucket hat is a disappointment to me because the 2013 and 2014 models fit so much better, but I'm sure that there are some kiddy heads out there for whom the new design is the right fit.
