I bought these after almost dying playing on a glacier at Mt Hood, I didn't want to spend $170 when I wasn't trying to go ice climbing, just enough teeth to feel safe where ever. These do the job great, good quality, easy on and off, light, feel good, great product for safety.

These exceeded my expectations. I just used them to summit Mt. Washington. They got me up and down the steep section of Tuckerman's Ravine Winter Route. I would still recommend real crampons for the steep sections, but these worked for me and were more than enough for the rest of the route.
  • Can't believe I hiked before getting these

The first issue I had was a chain breaking at the point of connection to the front plate, REI replaced them and said they'd seen the problem before. This was after maybe 30 miles on them, mostly hard icy trails with a little intermittent rock. The second problem I'm having is the rear plate slipping off the heel of my mountaineering approach boots ( Salewa Rapace's ) frequently. They say XL for my size twelve's, but that's right on the edge of L/XL so perhaps I really needed an L instead. They seem to hold on my 'winter' boots OK, probably because they have a wider heel and a snowshoe strap welt. Anyway, Guess I have some doubts about durability and depending on your boot, the sizing and whether the heel plates will constantly slip. So far would go with kahtoolas again next time - not an improvement for me.

If you are going to be walking on a lot of ice, these are for you! They are well built with an aggressive design that gives you a very nice bite, even on glare ice. They are easy to put on and take off, which is good because you will want to remove them before walking on anything other than snow and ice! (they will damage regular floors). All in all, I would recommend them to anybody looking for great traction.

While I haven't tested these in the Himalayas, I have worn them for 2 seasons in Wisconsin with great results. They grip really well, and install/remove fairly easily. If I transition from ice or off-road to sidewalk, I take them off and carry in the dog's plastic bag (and hope she doesn't do anything that requires me to pick something up with the bag). I've used on frozen lakes (surprisingly loud crunching on ice), frozen marsh with lots of grass and deep snow. The only wear I've noticed is on the bottom of the spikes from me walking on concrete, otherwise they look brand new. Not for casual walking on sidewalks. Or hardwood floors.

I have worn these for 3 winter hikes now. I wear a women's size 7 1/2 hiking boot, but purchased the medium in these. They work great on packed snow trails and ice. My husband and I did a 10 mile hike in Estes and also have hiked to the top between the 1st and 2nd flatirons during December and January and we felt sure footed and safe while we saw others slipping and falling all over the place. Great product!

Total success, if you have any plans to be in the wilderness, hilly areas, or flat ground with the potential of snow or ice you will benefit from these trail crampons. My wife and I both got a pair knowing we'd be hiking in Yosemite monthly through the winter and they are bar far worth their weight in gold. After the first big snow of the season we flew up Yosemite's "Mist Trail" rock stair case (which is hundreds of feet tall and was covered in inches of ice) with ultimate confidence. Light enough to be a staple in your winter day pack, they are an absolute MUST HAVE for winter hiking and back country excursions.
