Read More I have had the Fenix UC40UE for about a year. The positives are that the light is very bright on its highest setting, and I like its compact size. The negatives are that the switch on the unit is kind of a pain to use, the switch brightness settings, and turn off setting are just akward. The worst thing about this unit is the battery. If I don't use it for a period of time the battery discharges completely. This takes somewhere between 4-8 weeks. I have owned three other high end flashlights (all Streamlight), and left one in my motorcyle for 11 months and it still had a good charge left in the battery when I turned it on. If your looking for a high end flashlight I would look elsewhere. For the money there are better choices. -

Read More The other reviews have it covered well. I can only add that Fenix does not make the proprietary battery available as a replacement nor backup. That is almost a deal breaker. I do not like the fit of the cr123a's nor the 18650. An adapter sleeve should be provided for those as well as an extra charge port plug, switch cover, and O-ring. Otherwise, this is an amazing, very high quality light. -

Read More Used this light recently on a trip to Moab, and it worked great. Doing some night photography, it was able to fully light up a large boulder (Balancing Rock in Arches NP) from about 100 yards away on "turbo" mode. The ability to charge the battery while _in_ the flashlight via standard USB is wonderful - using the same charger+cable as your phone/tablet/etc. really cuts down on clutter; no need to screw it open to pull out the battery to place in a bulky charging station. The high/turbo modes are great for instantly lighting up a cave/tunnel/basement/etc, and probably good for blinding/scaring off things that go bump in the night. Walking around in the pitch dark with it though, even on low it's a bit too bright if you want to keep some semblance of night vision. I was covering half the lens with my thumb to make it tolerable on a recent short night hike. Although in that situation, something like a more diffuse headlamp and/or red light would probably be better. The only negative I could nitpick would be that the on/off switch can be a hair difficult to find by feel. -

Read More I have many high end flashlights as well as custom and home modified Maglites. I literally have dozens of lights to compare and contrast the mighty UC40UE against and it stacks up very very well. Comparing it to its closest in size and power Fenix stablemate, the 2014 edition PD35, the UC40UE comes out on top despite not having a pocket clip. On candl epowerfurms.com you can find vastly detailed and in depth reviews on any light you can think of with the testing results being very accurate. Both the 2014 edition PD35 and the UC40UE are rated by Fenix at 960 lumens max output yet the UC40UE actually puts out close to a utterly blinding 1100 lumens on turbo mode vs the PD35 maxing out at a still excellent 970 lumens. Candela output is also in favor of the UC40UE by just under 100 more. What does that mean? It means the UC40UE throws its beam a touch longer and a touch stronger. Also the rechargeable battery in the UC40UE is excellent and very well designed. USB charging the UC40UE from just above dead takes just over 3 hours in my experience. If you cannot wait that long you can remove the proprietary battery and throw in an 18650 of your choice just remember that the charging feature only works with the proprietary battery. This easily pocketable light is the most solidly designed and built smaller Fenix that I have had or seen it makes the 2014 edition PD35 seem anemic. The charging port is in the tail very well covered and protected by a rubber push in stopper. There is also a small led just above the charging port that blinks red when it needs charging and stays red during charging and turning green once fully charged. The in between modes (low, med. high) are well thought out and useful. The beam profile remains solid and legible throughout all power settings. My copy came with an excellent Fenix belt sheath that I do indeed use as well as the standard Fenix spare o-rings and lanyard. There is only one operating switch on this light that turns the light on, off and cycles between modes. Fenix uses the same or similar small soft touch switch on many of its other lights but here it really needs to be larger and raised off the surface more. Finding the switch in the dark takes getting used to. But most ppl are not able to wear the belt sheath at times so throwing the UC40UE into your pocket makes one feel a bit awkward hoping the light doesnt somehow slip out of a pocket dropping to who knows where. It sorely needs a pocket clip. I am certain there are clips from other lights that will fit it somehow but what those lights are is anyones gues. All in all this is still another big win from Fenix. The quality is top notch all throughout and the charging system as well as its proprietary battery are excellent. I would only change out the battery for an 18650 in an emergency situation but it is quite nice to have that option. The strobe on the UC40UE is utterly crippling! A pocketable 1000+ lumen self defense tool if needed just be ready for it. My copy of the UC40UE does indeed get warm then very warm when left on turbo mode. Oddly my copy has yet to step down in power to cool even after letting it go full blast for over 25 minutes! It goes from very warm to almost very warm and stays there. It was a cool night so your MMMV. If you purchase either the UC40 or UC40UE you MUST remember that the proprietary battery in BOTH these lights have plastic protectors on the positive and negative ends of their batteries to protect them during shipping. You must get the battery out and remove the plastic protective pads BEFORE you charge it! Nothing will happen if you do not. To small and not tactile enough power switch and lack of a pocket clip aside the rest of the light is so well done and well thought out and especially built to last-you could easily use this light as a blunt striking instrument if needed and it should still be fine-that it almost makes up for those two drawbacks. Do not be suprised to see something like a "2015 Edition UC40" series with a larger, raised switch and a pocket clip included in the packaging. Fenix is still on a roll lately that is leaving most other high end flashlight manufactures even further behind. Totally worth the money as usual. This light will last as long as the LED emitter holds out and 50,000 hours of emitter life broken down into even daily short uses is a very long time! -

Read More Fenix UC40 is a very impressive rechargeable flashlight. This light blows away all the cheap flashlights I've ever bought. the fact that you can charge the flashlight using the micro USB port using an external battery pack helps tremendously. Although not cheap, it's performance is cheaper than say the SureFire PD35s. Reasons not to buy this light is if you're using this light in a more tactical application e.g. police/military. The location of the power button on the housing vs. at the endcap makes it possible for one to fumble a second while trying to turn on the light. Or if you're not keen on shelling out $90 for a very well built and waterproof flashlight. Otherwise fantastic light for every day carry. -

Jun 14, 2014DOAIt was back ordered so I had to wait two weeks. When it finally arrived...it didn't work. I guess I will take it to the store to swap it out. Very strange.
Read More For the reviewer's stating the flashlights battery was dead, you must first remove the protective cap on the rechargeable battery before use or it will not work. It's really a great light and the rechargeable capability and use of cr123a batteries make it very versatile.
