I am going to break down the kit in to the 4 parts The 13w solar panel is wonderful, like the rest of the Goal zero gear I have. (5 stars) The inverter works well just don't ask the world from it. It is rated at .7A (75w) so if you keep it under that life is good. (5 stars) Laptop plugs, I did not have a use for any of the parts in the kit, but it is nice and they look well made. (5 stars) I have used this a bit and have had the time to test it on a ten day bike tour with 27w of solar panels as well as at home with the wall charger. I did not have much luck getting it to charge on the road. Your best bet is to charge it on a zero day or every day at lunch. Charging a cell phone with it is over kill. I have got it to charge an ms surface pro 2 (12v 42mah battery) with the 12v dc out port, The Sherpa 50 charged it from 10% to 80%. The reason I am only giving the Sherpa 50 only 2 stars is that it would never charge past 80%. I called goal zero and was told to do a “reset” on it by removing the fuse. After trying this and trying to recharge it again and again I gave up. I called them back and was asked to send then an email with the REI invoice and my address and they would get with me to replace it. I will update this when they work it out with me. This battery cost too much to have a dead cell of a fault in the controller. I charged it right when it came in the mail (to 80%) the blue light would blink but the “full segment” would stop blinking and go away after 5 min or so. Sometimes it gets stuck at 60% and resting it gets it to 80% but at this cost I should not have to pull a fuse to get it to kind of work.

I've used the Sherpa 50 Kit on our Expedition in Nepal this spring and it gave us the power we needed to charge our cell and satellite phones, cameras etc. Great kit that I can recommend for anyone that need that little extra power - Solar panel also worked well and hour estimates for charging we found more or less accruate.

The design and idea of the sherpa 50 kit is outstanding, but the quality control is abysmal. At first, it took two days of south georgia summer sun to get to 20% power. This rate eventually got better and it only took two days to fully charge the unit. This was okay though as it wasn't speed I was after when I bought this. It was durability. Now however, the laptop light will come on regardless of the switch position whenever I turn on the unit. It still works, but I would never trust it in a situation where I needed to depend on it. Which is what I bought it for. Quality control is far too important and a company that doesn't put it's all in it doesn't get my money but once.

Field Day is an event held annually that gives amateur radio operators a chance to test their mettle in emergency situations. My Sherpa 50 powered my radio for the 24 hour event, exceeding my highest expectations. Our team contacted hundreds of other operators nationwide with juice to spare. I have also used this system on the Boston Harbor Island national park campgrounds, seven miles out to sea. With this system I keep my phone, tablet, lights, cameras, and radio rocking all weekend. You can't beat the simplicity, reliability, and versatility. I have two, and I will get a couple more. Yes, they are that good.

I use this unit mostly for traveling and working in Kenya. Its sweet spot is cell phones. And since everyone in the world, it would seem, now uses cell phones, the Sherpa 50/Nomad 13 is a handy combo-tool to have. The best part about this set is the size. Without the inverter, I can keep the battery in my jacket pocket, or on my dash, or just about anywhere. The panels fold up well and disappear into my backpack. The set is not only portable, but also discreet, and doesn’t attract any unwanted attention. At the same time, it charges gadgets extremely fast and my team can charge several phones or cameras a day – and do this for several days in a row before the Sherpa must be recharged. The main drawback is a necessary one with the speed and portability benefits: it can’t charge my computer. (For that I use the Sherpa 100.) It can, however, power my trail cameras, which is handy and saves me buying a bunch of AAs all the time. The little features make the set even more versatile. The LED is helpful for finding the flashlight you just charged, since the Sherpa is much easier to locate in the dark than a tiny headlamp. The thin metal cable is awesome for securing the unit to your tent, pack, or whatever else to make sure that wind and bumpy roads don’t bounce the thing onto a sharp rock.
