I got 2 of these in black for our "go bags". I am not a backpack snob and not a professional backpacker, but these seem to have quality and value. I was really impressed by all the attention to detail. I love the narrow tall shape - it sits close to your body, making it easier to walk. The safety whistles are a nice touch. Love the front mesh pocket - it is stretchy and great for holding items like bandana, gloves, boonie hat, maybe snacks. The side "bottle" pockets are good and stretchy, but bottles will occasionally get squeezed out, so I also attach them to straps via carabiner clips. perhaps they should've been taller or maybe have a strap or flapover. Even if you don't lose your bottle, you don't want to have it out and dangling as you walk :) I do not intend to use the hydration bladder option, but it's a nice option (bladder not included). Love the roomy "pocket" in the top flap - I manage to fit a first aid kit and a bunch of other items, like snacks, flash light, sunglasses, etc. ROOMY. Absolutely love the little pockets in the hip straps - great for accessing without taking off the pack. I put my asthma rescue inhaler here. The rest is just the large inner chamber - I have it packed bottom to top (vertically), so I can get top items by opening the zippers slightly. Alternatively you could pack it like a suit case - bottom stuff on the "back", but you'd have to unzip all the way. I have small cooking gear (to boil water), camp mug, a change of clothing/underwear, a pouch with small tools, a "beverage" pouch (coffee/tea/sugar, etc.), dry food, etc. Most everything you'd need for 3 days. I like to use the "pouch" system - pick up various travel toiletry pouches at local thrift stores (either wash or wipe with disinfectant). A pouch for tools, a pouch for tea (and candy, chewing gum), a pouch for water filtration/treatment (though I store my Sawyer Mini in a nalgene-style bottle in the side pocket - keeps it from being crushed). You can have a fire-starting pouch, toiletry/hygiene pouch, etc. If you can color-code them - even better :)

I was in need of a new day pack and purchased this one on the REI website without having seen, test fitted it in person. I think its a great pack! I got it to replace my old REI Lookout pack and so far its done a great job. I hiked the Franconia Ridge in NH with 18 lbs of gear and water and it felt as comfortable at the end of the hike as it did at the beginning. I also like the color, Redrock, a lot as well!

Clean lines + just enough features. A solid basic.

I bought this pack hoping that it could double as both a day pack and something that would work for a bit longer trip if necessary. Its maiden voyage was a 5-hr hike in 95 F heat and then I took it up Half Dome this past weekend. Overall, it is a great pack that has just the right amount of features, making it fully functional and ultra comfortable. One that, with a light load, you can almost forget is on your back. What's awesome: // The hydration bladder pocket has a wide opening that easily fit a 3L Platypus bladder. No struggling whatsoever to get it all inside -- just dropped it in. // The top outside pocket is large and easily accessible. // Super comfortable hip belt with a wide strap and zipper pockets on both sides that fit and iphone and would fit a larger point-and-shoot camera easily. // Great fit. What's good: // Plenty of space inside when you need it, straps to compress when not. // Big outside pocket to stash has stretchy mesh that keeps things in place. // Back ventilation functions well -- it never felt too hot. // Huge side pockets. What could be improved: // Only one outlet through which to thread the hydration pack hose, on the left side. I ended up routing it up thru it, behind my neck, and down through the strap on my right side. This made it an easily accessible length, but it would be good to have an outlet on both sides for options. I am definitely looking forward to more trekking with this pack.

I bought this pack for a 3-day hiking weekend at Zion National Park (Thanks REI Adventures for a great trip). It easily carried all my essentials (rain gear, snacks, mid layers, first aid kit, etc.) and I was also able to carry a 2-liter hydration pack and two Nalgene water bottles. Shoulder straps are generously padded and so is the back of the pack. It was a very comfortable fit and I'm a big guy (6'1" 240 lbs.) I picked this pack because I needed more support in the shoulders than my 25L REI Flash pack but didn't want the bulk of a 40L day pack. Only thing I would suggest is to include a rain cover. The REI banded 20L cover works perfectly with this though.
