Rated 3 out of 5 by from Don't Know Yet... I bought two pairs of these yesterday in store at the 2014 anniversary sale. I have been buying a pair or two every spring during the anniversary sale for several years now. This year I noticed the pants no longer come with light weight belts and have switched from snaps to buttons. The buttons feel weakly attached to the pants. In the real world and outback, I have never lost a snap off an item of clothing, however I lose buttons all the time. We will see if these make it a year before I return because of button loss. A $64 pair of pants shouldn't come with furture sewing tasks, and if in the field good luck...

Rated 1 out of 5 by from short zipper Am a long time buyer and user of Sahara Convertible pants. This one, however: first, no belt. All earlier ones came with a belt. So a bit less convenient. But the real problem is the fly zipper. I immediately noted that it seemed short. And indeed it is a good 2 and 1/2 inches shorter than the fly zipper in my previous pair. Checked with REI and apparently this is not a defect. Seems like that might make them pretty unusable. They do seem otherwise to be well made. Maybe I will have to wear these super low on my hips. Or maybe I will just have to give up and return them. Disappointing.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Always changing! I've been buying these pants for many years. Every year the design changes -- usually for the worse. I agree with many of the other comments. I want a belt and a metal waist snap fastener. The fly zipper is at least a couple of inches too short to be able to urinate comfortably standing up. The sizing has changed drastically. I managed to lose some weight this past year, so my medium pants were way to big. I ordered a small and a medium pair to see which would be the best fit. I was surprised to find that the medium is a little tight. On the positive side, I like the soft feel of the new fabric.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Light and Sturdy I'm highly pleased in these pants and have used them all over the US. Living in the desert and have many Acacia bushes, which tear and snag lots of other items, but not these! Used them in sharp rocky areas and have had no tears. I just tore a 6 year old pair climbing a wire fence the other day, but they were well worn and almost threadbare, so that was expected. I feel they hold up to the elements and are quick to dry. Yes, bummed the sizing has changed, oh well, just get a bigger size. The button has to go, liked the old snap. I just transfer the belts from the old to the new pants. So I still give them a 5 despite the small changes.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Oh REI! How could you? I have bought so many pairs of these hiking pants (the men's fit better than the womens for me) because they were comfortable, fit perfectly, and held up over many kayak and backpacking trips. Alas, I bought a pair yesterday without even trying them on and what did I find? They no longer fit -- not even close -- they look cheap, and the waist is so low it would be ridiculous to wear on an outdoors excursion or to teach my field classes. Oh REI! How could you? Now I must go clothes shopping (which I hate to do anywhere but REI) and find a substitute, or switch my REI allegiance to Columbia. PLEASE bring back the great old men's Sahara convertibles that have taken me through so many excellent adventures for so many years. When you have a great thing -- why mess with it?

Rated 4 out of 5 by from love the 'sand' color, please bring it back I have two pairs of the 'sand' color pants. I love them. I like the side pockets, the ability to turn them into shorts, it's ability to quickly dry, their lightness and of course the 'sand' color. I bought both 'sand' color pants prior to 2014. REI now stocks a color called, 'sandcastle' and it's a color I like. Please ask the manufacturers to bring back the 'sand' color. Oh, @ 2 years of good use the stitching, in back pocket areas, will get worn out and stitching will fall apart, rendering the pocket useless b/c objects will fall out.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Why did they change the design? I have been buying these pants for years. The best were from 10+ years ago where I still own two pairs that have been to the seamstress many times over for repairs because I refuse to quit wearing. These recently underwent a significant design change that went to a slimmer fit, deleted the built-in belt and added a stupid button. I can no longer wear these. I am upset. However, I just found a twenty dollar cotton pant with similar fit and style of the 10 yr old REI version at a membership warehouse that I recommend over these. Check them out.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Sizing and Buttons I am a 33 and I still found the mediums to be a bit tight for hiking,,, also I was disappointed to see a button instead of a snap and mine did fall off!! A bit disappointing to see REI compromise with this essential piece of hiking gear. I think our brand, in regards to convertible pants should be as good as North Face.

If these pants were treated with a fabric waterproofing spray would they become reasonable (if not perfect) rain pants? If this was done, how breathable would they be compared to a material such as Gore tex?

Asked by: LEDS
It is possible to treat the Sahara Convertible Pants with a water repellent treatment. This will not make the pants 100% waterproof as the seams are not sealed or taped. It will simply add a durable water repellent finish (DWR) to the outside of the fabric. This will allow the water to bead up on the outside of the fabric instead of being absorbed. Nikwax TX.Direct 2.0 Wash-In Water Repellent Treatment would be a great choice. Using this treatment will acutally improve the breathability of the pants.

Is low cut waist still the design REI is currently using? I was planning to purchase 2 pair as gifts, but reviews about the new lower waist cut has me concerned they will not fit as well, but those reviews were from a year ago or more. Date: June 2016

Asked by: dbm
The Sahara Convertible Pants have been a REI staple for many, many years. While the fit has not changed recently, some will find due to updates the design has a slightly different fit compared to the versions made 5 or 10 years ago.
