Ruffwear Swamp Cooler Cooling Dog Vest
- The evaporative cooling process is what makes this vest work—simply soak the vest with water, wring it out, strap it on and heat is dissipated as the water evaporates
- Wicking mesh layer on top facilitates evaporation and releases heat, middle layer absorbs and stores cooling water, and bottom layer transfers the cool to your dog
- Light-colored fabric reflects sunlight and heat to increase cooling efficiency
- Ergonomic cut wraps back and chest to offer a comfortable fit that stays in place; quick-release buckles allow an adjustable fit and easy on/off convenience
- Attachment loop situated between dog's shoulder blades offers a clip point for a beacon light (light sold separately); reflective trim enhances visibility in low light

Read More I was skeptical but took a leap of faith awhile back and purchased. I never write product reviews but I had to for this. You will not regret investing in this for your active dog. Even when it's really hot he/she will be cool to the touch under the vest. This is Lucy sun bathing rather than heading for the shade after a 35-45 minute out, 90 degree desert hike in Mexico. (yes I know, 90, Lucy is small but mighty and has been camping/hiking/climbing regularly with me for over 2 years) There were shady spots with stream access along the way and swimming hole at the end. I am always overly cautious and so I soaked the vest at the start, half way, and end. It really didn't need it at halfway. I usually re-wet it after about an hour or so on regular summer days (sunny and 80) so you will want to figure out how much water is needed based on the vest size and your activity and plan accordingly if water will not be accessible. I did a couple practice sessions near home first. These vests are well made and really do work. If your pup is in between sizes, go for what covers more of their back length wise. The XS was the right length but chest too big so I spent $4 and had a tailor take in the shoulders. Absolutely worth every penny and then some! I seriously can't say enough good things. -

Read More Hank gives this vest "four paws up"! We are spending a considerable amount of time travelling up and down the Central Valley and camping the deserts of California. I have a small sports car with no air-conditioning. Even on cooler days, the road heat alone can get intense and Hank has nowhere he can get out of the sun. This was our first trip with the vest and it was awesome! The usual panting and restlessness gave way to naps and snoring. I drenched it twice over the course of a six hour road trip. It does not drip excessively. If you are a bit "house proud" (and if you drive with your dog in the car, you aren't), this isn't ideal...but you probably have AC. Even dry, the light color reflects the sun so I just left it on him even as the day cooled. It's easy to adjust with the two buckles which are well protected from tangles with long fur. It may appear to be too large when on the hanger but the medium fit Hank perfectly. "Arm" holes are really generous. This was money well spent! -

Read More Max used the Swamp Cooler vest for the first time today hiking the Hawes Trail in the Lower Salt River Valley. 85 plus degrees. Vest worked awesomely. Friend's dog did not have a cooling vest and we could really tell the difference. In fact my friend went straight to REI after the hike to get his dog the Swamp Cooler vest. Max loves it and I do too. -

Read More Klaus is my 1 year old German Shepard, he is mostly black and his black fur gets crazy hot in the Las Vegas, Nevada area. He loves to go into desert with me but he gets so hot you almost cant touch him. I saw this at REI when I was getting him a back pack during the winter, so I picked one up. Last week 5/14 we went into Hidden Valley to look for two F4s that crashed, and it was hot ( a dry heat, LOL ). I soaked it in the sink before we left then threw it into my Yeti ice chest. When we got there I put it on him, it was about an hour hike to get to the main impact site. When we arrived it was dry on the outside but still wet and very cool underneath, he was a happy boy. At the crash site I rewet it by putting it into a large Zip Lock and adding a 16oz bottle of water, it soaked up all 16ozs. I could tell Klaus wanted it back on. I rate it at 5 stars, even though Klaus it a 90 pound big boy I got him a medium. The large did not fit as tight as I liked even though it covered closer to his tail. He loves to jump over rocks and bushes so I felt the large would get hung up. Now I don't know and I hope never to find out but I think this will give him some added protection from a rattler, as he has zero with out it. -

Read More This is a fantastic jacket. First it does a great job keeping my black pup cool in the Arizona heat. My only complaint is that it uses a ton of water which isn't always handy when you're hiking in the desert, and the straps around the belly aren't very adjustable. Our pup is equipped with a small and the chest strap has to be tightened as much as possible but the length isn't 1-2 inches short. Our pup is 40 lbs, fit and well proportioned. -
Mar 15, 2014Great ItemI love this swamp vest and the dog loves it to keeps her nice and cool in the warm spring months and will be great for the hot summer here in Arizona

Read More The purpose was our jogging tours at the French Mediterranean coast, where the temperature easily rises above 34°C (93°F). The Swamp cooling vest was cable to keep her back; shoulder and chest nice chill during the daily one hour run. People who did not know this cooling vest, looked suspicious at us, and maybe wondering; why we were mistreat our dog with clothes in such a heat. A kind of info on the side of the vest like "Cooling Vest" could alleviate the suspicious expressions from other people. I will buy again; Yes! If the dog have short and not too thick fur.
Read More I bought the vest for my 70lb Siberian husky. She is 4 years old and lives in Washington. We are moving back to El Paso Tx (Where there's no REI or any other camping store that carries this product) so I wanted to make sure it fit/ worked before we moved. I was skeptical about her long hair, but the vest works amazing. She is no longer miserable in the hot heat. I also got a patch stitched on the vest with all her info, since it's not made of gel. Her easy-walk harness fits perfectly over it too. It's long enough to cover her whole body and made well to move when she walks and lays down.
