Read More I haven't had the bag on my back too many times, but I think first impressions are the best. Pros: A high quality REI product, made well and well thought out. Very comfortable and form the looks of it I think it will be durable. Eats up the items you stuff in it it, and will a full load it is stable, form fitting and comfortable. It was a pleasure to wear all day. Cons: They are minor but enough to comment. The side pockets for water bottles just aren't great. A normal pocket is deep and will hold things like gloves or a map without thinking about them. The new pockets are shallow and odds and ends feel like they could fall out. They didn't but just don't feel as secure. Organization pockets - simply could use a bit more than the two vertical pockets. All in all I do really like it, it isn't perfect but it's a great pack for a long day and at a great price. -

Read More I bought this pack for multiple uses, from being the "emergency pack" in the trunk of the car, in case I have to walk home in an emergency (would be several days) to an overnight hike while camping. Being somewhat new to backpacking, I didn't want to get into an expensive pack as the first one, and found this on a good sale. It's a nicely designed pack, with plenty of pockets and adjustments, and carries well on my back. Because of this size range, it has several main compartments rather than one big one. That's a plus to organize your things well, but a possible negative if you're used to one big compartment. I would recommend getting this if you find it one sale, since it's much less than one of the other big brands, and I consider this a best buy for a large day pack or small overnight pack. -

Read More i've had some problems with rei daypacks' water bottle holders failing due to lousy materials in their mesh. Hopefully this day hiker will last because the features and design on this pack are first rate. If it does fail due to weak materials it'll be a shame. $2-$6 more in production cost usually keeps these things from happening. Hopefully they spent that money on this pack, cause i sure love it even at $15-20 more on the purchase price. Please rei products, get better. I used to buy rei products because of reliability and value but my feelings have changed after recent experiences with rei brand products….. -

Read More I bought this to replace my supplied CERT training pack. It has tons of useful features. It allowed me to pack heavy not so used items on the bottom of the pack and still gain access just as fast. My only gripes so far is my bottled water has fallen out twice in the burn house exercise and there is not reflective panel or place to put a beacon. I ended up gooping loop tape under the rei logo to apply ranger eyes and my name tape. So far so good. -

I am also using it as a school backpack and am having difficulty fitting 3 binders in it at a time. Other than that though it's a perfect backpack! -

Read More First off, this is a great pack. I use it a lot. Mainly for weekend trips. I found that i needed a tweener bag. Something between my laptop bag and my Deuter 65 backpack. This is the best compromise. 40 Liters is exactly what i needed and then add in the features like the bottom access, the top soft compartment, and external bladder storage really sold me. Now, what i don't like about this particular bag. I wish it was the women's bag, but with men's straps and colors. I like the vertical zipper, streamline look to this. But for functionality, the women's just works better. The smaller compartment is easier to access and keep organized. Like an old school bag. It works and it is a classic design for a reason. I see it extremely useful for travel as a carry on, etc. The mens design, not so much. One thing that is specific to me that i find frustrating is that the frame hits my helmet when I'm on my motorcycle. I have a crotch rocket so I'm in more of crouched/prone position which requires me to lift my head back. The frame prevents that. The only solution is to loosen the shoulder straps and to have the waist belt free. Very specific, but just thought anyone else looking for a bike bag might want to consider. I still love this bag despite the little design differences. I hope REI listens to all of our requests and considers it for the next lookout model. I might have to get another.
Read More I recently purchased my Lookout 40 pack and fell in love. The features on this pack are incredible. There is plenty of compartment space for day hikes of light or heavy loads. There is a bottom entrance to the main compartment to easily get to those hard to reach items so you don't have to dig down from the top. Excellent gear straps. The hip and shoulder belt/straps provide great support to ease the load from your back. I was leery of the color at first but it has quickly grown on me. When I took this pack for its first day hike recently I was gushing about how I loved my new pack. The price is unbeatable as well. Definitely worth your time and money.
