But recently, my wife and I went to REI to get hydration packs for XC skiing in Central Oregon. The salesman described and showed us differences between Osprey and another major brand. I appreciated his comments, liked the looks of the Raptor 14, and it felt comfortable. I scored the Osprey a 4 star rather than a 5 in order to 1. maintain my status as a crumudgeon and 2. To caution that you securely tighten the diaphragm lid. Twice I've cross threaded it and had leaks. But that was obviously operator error. -

Read More Great pack to replace my old Vaude pack for mountain biking. Love the belt pouches - keep my garage door opener in one so I don't have to take the pack off at the end of the ride. Lots of storage space but not too big that it feels too bulky. The only problem is the bladder is a little hard to get completely dry, even with hanging, so I worry about mold getting in there. I just use my Camelbak bladder in it, and it works fine.
