Read More This is a good pillow that falls short of being truly great. My primary point of comparison is a Cocoon Hyperlite inflatable. First, the Good: The shape of the Exped is superb. The flattish surface doesn't make you feel like your head is going to roll off to one side or another like other inflatables I've owned. The curved edge and asymmetrical height makes this versatile and comfortable for both side and back sleeping. The weight and volume is also very good. The weight of the medium size is 1.6 ounces w/o the stuff sack. This compares to my Hyperlite at just under 2.6 oz. The Not Great: The surface material is not comfortable on the skin. It's basically plastic. Sticky in hot conditions and cold in cold conditions. The air valve is a 1.5" diameter opening that seals with a plastic plug, which allows for quick inflation and deflation. However, unlike valves that screw open and shut (Hyperlite) this arrangement doesn't allow for easy fine tuning the inflation level during the night. Compared to my Hyperlite, this pillow seems a little on the noisy side when you move about. It's not loud enough to wake your tentmate, but any noise right next to your ear is going to be accentuated. Maybe it's because there is no fabric covering to mute the crinkle. Lastly, this is an expensive bit of gear. The cost benefit (a.k.a. value) is average. The prefect inflatable pillow would be the love child of a Hyperlite and the Exped. Combine the comfortable covering and efficient valve from the Hyperlite with the outstanding shape of the Exped. I'd trade an ounce of weight for a softer covering. -

Read More Needed a pillow for bike touring and backpacking and Exped seemed the way to go. I have one of their down mats. I bought the UL pillow over the regular model for the reduction in packed sized, not weight. The UL appears to be 1/2 to 1/3 the packed volume of the regular model. Mine weighs 50 ±5gm. Only tried it at home so far but seems comfortable enough. -
May 21, 2014Super small but inflates to a great sizeI had trouble finding a backpacking pillow I liked. The Exped UL is so far the best I've found. Non-inflatable pillows collapse too easily. The fact that it packs up tiny is a plus.

Read More We have 2 of these pillows, both UL Medium. Tried them out for the first time this past weekend and they're very comfortable! My husband liked sleeping on his stomach, said he was surprised at how comfortable it was with the pillow. It does have a very plastic feel to it though. I'd recommend covering it with a shirt or a little pillow case. I think that would make it much more comfortable for me!
Read More This thing packs down to nothing and inflates easy. Unfortunately it has some downsides. It's noisy. I have an Exped Synmat 9 DLX that's awesome if you can handle the weight, but when using this pillow it kind of squeaks and creaks any time you make even the smallest adjustment. It's also not terribly comfortable. I'm going to try to get a soft grippy-ish cover for it and hopefully that will make this more useful/comfortable. I think the downside of any inflatable pillow is that they are just way to firm for my liking. If you are a back sleeper this thing may just be great for you. If not it's probably not going to suit you at all. Pros: Size Weight Cons: Comfort Noise I'd probably recommend it for it's size/weight if you are a back sleeper only. I'll try to update this review when I try it with it covered with a shirt or some other covering.
