Read More Lowa renegade low tops? Not for my feet. These shoes hammered my feet for all of the 130 miles of trail from White Pass, WA to the Cascade Locks (the Columbia River. For just the first twelve miles I could forgive them for not loving my feet, but after that, the truce disintegrated. The shoes, true to size for my size 11.5 feet, failed ever to conform to my feet and my feet wouldn't mold to the shoes. I have sensitive feet that make me wince when walking over fine gravel. I had hoped that the beefy looking soles would protect my feet from rocks and roots--I felt them painfully through the soles. The validity of applying the term "break in" to shoes like the Lowa Renegades escapes me. The shoe has a synthetic insole and mid sole materials, that will never cradle feet like the leather soles of boots made generations ago. I really wanted to believe the fitter in REI Sacramento--the shoes just didn't cooperate. I wish I'd read the reviews before pulling the trigger. -

Read More I REALLY wanted to like these shoes. I liked the look and the way they laced up and after reading the reviews I ordered a size 13 since they were said to run small and narrow (I have narrow feet and wear custom orthotics). The fit was perfect and I wore them quite often after receiving them in September. There was only one problem: they killed my feet. They were painful to wear for more than an hour. I tried different insoles, with and without my orthotics, tying them extra tight and then extra loose. Nothing helped. I had read that they may take some time to break in but I was beginning to think that my feet would not survive the break in period. Then the following April I was in the REI store in Santa Fe New Mexico and mentioned to the guy in the shoe department that if he could show me a hiking shoe that didn’t kill my feet like the Lowas I would buy it. Over the following 30 minutes I tried on shoes by Merrill, Asolo, Keen, Teva and finally The North Face walking around the store in each pair. I finally decided on The North Face Ultra 109 and couldn’t be happier. I wore them for the next two weeks hiking in Zion and then Arches National Parks and never looked back. The Lowas were returned. -

Read More I was a long time owner of Lowa Tempests and loved them but when the old ones wore out I saw that the new model had changes that made it a lesser shoe. So I upgraded and bought the Renegades. They fit right but I should have checked them out closer. In hindsight they don't live up to the old Tempests in several ways. 1) Cheap thin shoe laces. I replaced these with a paracord type that cost three or four dollars. 2) Cheap insoles with little or no support. Replaced these with a set of forty dollar. Superfeet Greens. When you buy shoes in this price range you would think the manufacturer would realize that simple things can make or break a sale. I should have been more diligent in my initial assessment. There are less expensive shoes that are probably just as good. -

Read More I love my Renegade Mids, so I bought these for lighter hikes on easier trails. While they look similar, a close inspection will show you that the shoelace eyelets are attached to very thin leather strips/tabs; the Mids have the eyelets bolted into the body of the shoe itself. While the metal hardware may look iimpressive, it doesn't take much wear and tear for one or more of these leather tabs to break -- which is exactly what happened to me, rendering an expensive shoe useless after minimal use. In fact, the rest of the shoe looks almost brand new. Shoelace attachment points are a key, vital part of any hiking shoe, and they're poorly conceived on the Renegade II GTX Lo's.
Read More I bought my first pair of Lowa shoes at Leon Greenman's on Spring st. in NYC in the late '60 and these are a far cry from those. I wore those everyday and on a lot of rough trails and they were perfect, never bothered my feet and lasted years. After about 8 months of trying to get these to "break in", even after changing the inserts, I gave up on them, when noticed that I had worn through the Vibram on the heel of the right shoe. Left one is still fine with plenty of life left. So my opinion is that they were very uncomfortable and short lived. The $16 pair of Costco sneakers that I wear now have out performed these in terms of comfort and aren't showing any abnormal wear patterns even though they are just as old and have gone through just as much on the street and on the trails here in TX.
